Rap? What do you think?
Non-Beer Discussion by CLASH
I like the old school 80's stuff as well as some of the 90's gangstER raps and a few new underground acts. But rap just like rock has gone to shiit in the mainstream. Its all bling bling Im rich and junk. Cant stand it!

Did you make this topic for me Shag? Rap music is the scourge of modern day society. It sucks, its boring, every song is the same damn thing, its loud and offensive... "I did a lot of drugs, had sex, degraded women, dealt drugs, killed people, got rich, rode around in fancy cars" blah blah blah blah... Cheers, Matt[:D] Nah, but you need to get your rap on damnit. We got rap threads here as well.
I am so sick and tired of people that call others "haters" for expressing their opinion or disagreing with "their" point of view. Rap IS CRAP! There is no redeming value to it whatsoever.

As I was saying earlier, what's in the mainstream ISN'T ANY indication as to what's out there. Is Bud/Miller/Coors an accurate reflection of what beer is about? Of course not. There is PLENTY of substance in underground lyrics, I'm guessing you didn't bother to give anything a listen that I pointed out earlier, so I'll stop here. No point in arguing with someone who has no interest in becoming educated on the subject, right? Also, as per your response to Sancho's comments, if you don't want to be accused of racist comments, I would stay away from comments that were derived from racist stereotypes (not smiling in photos). I see what you mean though, I'm going to a Common concert tomorrow night, the cover of his newest album really makes him look like he's out for blood, I'm almost scared to go now: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B0009IFEJ0/ref=dp_product-image-only_0/103-7658304-9705404?%5Fencoding=UTF8&n=5174&s=music

Feeling ignorant today? Mmm... delicious blanket statements. For the most part, I'd say that your post reflects what we know as mainstream rap. The public is only exposed to this crap that makes people like oiz think that there is no substance to hip-hop music. Believe what you want to believe, but spouting out such bold statements lets me know that you've only heard a small segment of hip-hop. It's like saying all beer sucks because you've only had Bud/Miller/Coors, ludicrous. You may not like some of the more underground artists, but I think you'd have a hard time saying there's nothing positive about it. Ignorant and truthful Cott....We have been through this before, and again, I ask the question....have you (or anyone else on this board) ever seen a rap/hip-hop artist smile in a publicity photo???.....The all look pissed off, and ready for blood....and that is the kind of culture this "genre of music" promotes.......I may be ignorant and I may have only been exposed to what's in the mainstream, but if what's in the mainstream is any indication as to what's out there, I want no parts of it!.......
if you don't want to be accused of racist comments, I would stay away from comments that were derived from racist stereotypes (not smiling in photos) Cott...Could you please explain to me how that is a racist steryotype...because one of your ganstas doesn't smile means I have to feel his pain and understand his hate filled violent tendancies???..Please...Spare me the PC BS!!!!...If anything, old Sancho's "Whitey" comment is more racist than anything I wrote on here.....Maybe when you get a little bit older, you will feel differently about this sort of thing........and yes your are correct...I don't care to be educated on the subject, either, because it's not music.....music has rythemn and a tempo, and is appealing to the ear.....Rap/Hip Hop is just goofy noises that attempts a beat with ghetto lyrics that are not sung, but spoken/shouted to whatever beat is attempted.....which is not appealing at all to the ears.....There is no continuity, no talent and no tempo....But like you said, there is no point in arguing, we aren't gonna sway each other....Get back to me on the subject in 10 or 15 years when you might have a couple of little Cotts running around who are listening to that garbage, and then let me know how you feel! Oiz P.S....You want some really good Black Music....Listen to Motown, Texas Blues, Philly Soul, and yes, dare I say it, even DISCO!!!!...At least those songs were fun, you could dance to them, there was musical quality and talent to them, and they didn't have any hate mongering messages!
It's a long running joke/stereotype that black people don't smile in photos. There was a Family Guy episode where Peter finds out one of his ancestors was black. Peter: "So I found out I have a black ancestor." Cleveland: "Is that right? Well that's fantastic Peter." Peter: "Yeah but see the problem is that..I..I got no idea on how to be black. Except for not smiling when I get my picture taken."

Rap is no longer just "Black Music." Sure it was founded by the black community, but as much as 1/5th of the rap I listen to today is written and performed by whites. I'm not talking Eminem or Vanilla Ice, there's much more to it than that. Esoteric, Copywright, Non Phixion, etc etc. Lots of good white rappers out there, despite what you've seen from Eminem and Vanilla Ice's crapfests. It's incredible that you can say that you don't want to be educated, yet you continue to spew forth ridiculous blanket statements that don't reflect on hip-hop at all. I don't want you to like rap, I don't expect you to. All I ask is that people give it a fair chance. I had this same fight with my father for 5+ years, now he keeps The Roots Phrenology album in his CD player at all times. Once he got over his close-mindedness and stubborness, he realized there is substance, and it was more than the "F this, F that, Kill Police, F a Hoe" that media rebelled against in rap's early days. Maybe I'll change my tune in 10-15 years? Why would you think that? Did your parents like the music you listened to when you were a kid? When my pop was a kid, his father told him when he grew up and had kids, he'd stop listening to Hendrix, Zeppelin, and the Who, and start listening to good music, like polka. Now that he's all grown up and has kids, his rock is still his favorite, and I share the interest with him. What's to say that I won't kick it with my kids 20 years down the road with a Jurassic 5 album? Face it, rap is not a fad. It's not one dimensional, someday people will stop being so close-minded to new kinds of music. Someday.

Most mainstream popular rap is crap. Rap can be artistic and musical. Just because Bill O'Reilly quoted some lyrics that made you nervous, you want to shield your little white suburban boys and girls. Well, when you quote one lyric in one ****ing song, of course something will piss you off. Listen to more than what MTV plays or what some self riotous newsman tells you. There are positive messages out there. Is anyone going to suggest that rock, country and R&B have no sex or violence in them???!!!
