What a cool idea and one of the many great features of the new site. Thanks, Flash! Well, i do have a small problem--i am not sure if Virginia is in the southern part of the northeast region, or the northern part of the southeast region[;)]! It occurred to me that there are probably lots of other members in the same boat. What states are in which regions[?] So, I did a little analysis using census regions and here is what I suggest for the USA. Notice that there are 51 "states" incl DC, and that these states are divided roughly evenly into 9 regions. States are listed alphabetically by region, regions from east to west. New England: CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT (5) Mid Atlantic: DC, DE, MD, NJ, NY, PA, WV (18) South Atlantic: FL, GA, NC, SC, VA (9) East North Central: IL, IN, MI, OH, WI (22) East South Central: AL, KY, MS, TN (6) West North Central: IA, KS, MN, MO, ND, NE, SD (17) West South Central: AR, LA, OK, TX (12) Mountain: AZ, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, UT, WY (42) Pacific: AK, CA, HI, OR, WA (70) By the way, the numbers in parentheses at the far right of each region are the numbers of medals won at the 2004 GABF[:D]. I suppose next we should clarify the countries that comprise East and West Europe, and the Territories in East and West Canada. And after that, the globe!! Bwah hah ha ha Foam

The whole thing started off by me playing around with the new forum. I wanted to see what a different "category" looked like, so I added the regions category. I put in Northeast and Southeast only because BP Chat was typically evenly split by members in the deep south and the PA/NJ/DE/CT area, which is relatively close together. Then I figured I'd add regions as the need for them arose. A few guys complained about not having southern CA and northern CA listed, so I humored them by adding Western, and joked that I'll throw in two more for all the time zones. Honestly, right now it's almost a waste of space to have so many regions because so few people use the forums, and most are from the same areas. I'll wait and see how it goes before adding any more. Of course, since anyone can participate in any region's forum, it really doesn't matter where you think you belong anyway. I'm willing to create forums for (almost) any topic, as long as the need is there.

If I were to make even more regions in the US, it seems more useful to split up California. The travel distance is more significant than northeast, mid-atlantic and southeast, and the beer scene is huge in both ends.

Surely Cali can survive with one forum if the Central forum can cover the 1700 miles between Fargo, ND and Brownsville, TX. [;)]
