HoneyRun Winery was founded by John and Amy Hasle, Winemaker, in 1992. From the beginning, Honey Run has made wonderful-tasting, fruit honey wine without added sulfites or preservatives. The original facilities were at the Hasle home in a small canyon that sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Chico, CA. With his background in honey, John had been tinkering with meads – honey wines – for quite some time. Within a few years, friends were trying to convince John to get a wine license. They wanted more than they felt comfortable taking for free: “You have to let us pay for this. I have friends who would pay for this,” they would urge. Amy rolled up her sleeves and began the process of licensure. John and Amy didn’t need to look far for the meadery name. They were making honey wine a mile away from the Honey Run covered bridge, and John had been producing Honey Run Honey since 1982. Honey Run Winery it was, and Amy Hasle would take the title of Winemaker in 1994. Looking back, the winery was a wedding present. John and Amy's wedding plans coincided with converting the garage to an actual winery. John searched boneyards, welded, and earned a sticker that said "Pound to fit. Paint to match." Near the end of construction, the newlyweds had a budget for the honeymoon that matched the budget for the remaining winery equipment. In the true spirit of small business, the Mexican Riviera brochures were returned to the drawer, and out came the brochure for an inexpensive week of kayaking in San Juan Islands above Seattle. Three years later, the winery outgrew its space in the canyon and moved to Park Avenue, just south of Downtown Chico. Honey Run fruit wine and mead is sold in natural food stores in twelve States, in many Chico and Paradise stores, and in most States online. Give it a try!
