"On a picture perfect day in September 2010 The Chocolate City Beer Team got the keys to its future home in Edgewood NE DC. As happy as we were to take a major step toward the final goal our mood was quickly stymied by the mountain of work needed to turn this forgotten stone edifice into a working brewery. With a deep breath we set ourselves to work, sifting thru the rubble, chopping back the weeds, clearing the air. After some hefty hauls the junk was out. The weeds were mowed. The garbage bagged and disposed. The walls sealed and painted. And when the dust had settled we found ourselves in this impressive rust red stone building beaming of character. Some say it was a fire house at one time. Some say it was a stone cutting facility and the stones cut there are now the beautiful Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the largest Roman Catholic Church in the United States, one of the ten largest churches in the world. If something so grand can be borne out of such a modest (yet sturdy as hell) building, it bodes well for Chocolate City Beer. Like our home, our ales and lagers are constructed brick by brick, malt by hop, a sum greater than its parts. Here’s a secret; we intend to bring you, DC, an ale, modeled in honor of our sturdy rust red stone building. We hope to capture thestrength and sturdiness of 2801 8th NE in brewed form, just you wait and see."
