La première lager blonde fut inventée en 1842 à Plzen en Bohémie. La ville engagea le maître brasseur bavarois Josef Groll, pour développer une nouvelle bière claire et dorée à une époque où elles étaient principalement foncées ou troubles. Trois ans plus tard, Groll retourna à Munich où il apporta son savoir-faire en Allemagne. Dès lors, ce style de bière conquit le monde.
