2018 Description This Old-World pale ale was HIghlander’s first beer, and remains one of our most-enjoyed brews. A classic pale ale taste with undertones of caramel, nuts and anise. Highlander Scottish Ale is made in the style of older Scottish brews. Its Edinburgh Ale yeast strain was imported from the United Kingdom. Four different varieties of malts and hops are used to create this UK-style beer with crystal clear Canadian water. 2012 Descripton ABV: 5.00% Highlander Scottish Ale is all natural with NO preservatives! This Scottish ale sits at 5% alcohol by volume (ABV) and colourwise is a very nice rendition of a British Pale Ale – reddish amber hues with a trend toward mahogany. The foam is a generous, mocha coloured and the bubbles are fairly small and tight. The nose is distinctly not North American – by that I mean, Brian has forgone the typical citrus hop nose you might normally find and has focused on malt. The aromas are licorice (anise) and dark bread (almost like toasted rye). As it warms, a few other characteristics start to show up – a hint of caramel and a touch of fruit (apricot). The body of Highlander is full – there are some burnt edges that are accented by coffee and dark chocolate. There's not a lot of bitterness but it does have a soft mouth coating tendency. Overall, a very drinkable pale ale on the British side of the style. It should go nicely this summer with a grilled steak or a spicy pork tenderloin.

Decent Scottish style ale from a small brewery in Ontario. Aroma is a bit sweet. Nice head, caramel body and a fairly smooth finish. Heavy on the bite at the front. Decent drinking beer.

The beer pours a clear ruby colour with a weak thin tan coloured ring for a head. The aroma is weak caramel, stale grains, and floral hops. The flavour is metallically sweet with a weak bitter finish. For years this was marketed as Highlander Pale Ale, however this is neither a pale ale, nor a Scottish ale. It’s not very good to be honest.

Pours a pretty big frothy off white head that leaves behind thick dirty lacing. Has a clear amber appearance. Aromas of sweet and light roasted malts, toasty and nutty malt notes as well. Flavours of toasted malts, hints of nuts and light caramel. Fairly strong hints of honey in the finish. Average carbonation. Medium bodied mouthfeel.

Clear copper colour pour with a head that dissipates quickly but does leave some lacing. Light and easy drinking. Ok flavour. Sweet malt, caramel, light fruits but no smoke. Aroma is similar but very mild. Weak mouthfeel. Quite enjoyed it after a tough 12 hr shift.

500ml from the LCBO and sometimes called "Highlander Pale Ale" as on their site (right now). Pours a clean copper colour with a warm cap that is frothy, decent lasting and gives out dirty lacing. I really like the smell of this one. Kind of a nutty coffee aroma with some light chocolate and roasted malts. Thin mouthfeel making this one go down easily. The flavours are a bit milder, but still good with some toffee, well-balanced with some nuts and very mild hop arrives in the aftertaste. Hints of dark fruits eventually make it out. I prefer this one not too cold. Quite pleasant overall with some subtle characters.

Milton LCBO Outlet #1 (Milton, Ontario, Canada)
    May 21, 2012
I tried this beer on May 21, 2012 after purchasing from one of the local LCBO outlets. The beer poured translucent coppery-brown colour with a thin tan coloured head. The aroma was sweet malt, molasses, caramel, and some floral hops. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is a disappointment. Quite metallic for a Scottish/Scotch ale

Bottle: Poured a deep burnished copper with ruddy highlights, smallish cap poor retention, modest lacing, moderately carbonated. Aroma is typical Brit: Toffee, toasty Marris malt over some leafy goldings. Thin palate. Toasty caramel malty in front, minimal hop balance, wet thin body, light bittering in the finish, Too sweet for a Pale or ESB, Not enough body for a wee heavy. With brand new brewing equipment they should do better than this 2 dimensional off style ale. Mildly interesting but needs work.
