Multi award winning Stonecutter Scotch Ale is the big, hearty, ‘red wine’ of our range. The Scotch Ale style is believed to have originated in Edinburgh in the 18th century and is colloquially known as "wee heavy" due to its higher strength than its paler siblings. We use nine malts blended together to produce layers of caramel, toffee, liquorice, chocolate and roasty flavours. These layers are balanced by a tart, raisiny fruitiness that gradually gives way to give this dark beer a lingering dry finish. Rich, full bodied, warming and moreish, Stonecutter pairs well with the following dishes: Venison Roast beef or lamb Hearty casseroles and stews Crème brûlée Scottish shortbread And for those of you who want to know about where the name Stonecutter came from, you will need to know the secret handshake. Cheers!

It is very hard to go wrong with a well made Scotch ale, and this is a well made Scotch ale. A clear reddish-brown colour, dark, with a creamy tan coloured cap. Aroma is peat, smoky, and fruity with some molasses thrown in for good measure. Flavour is sweet malt, molasses, and the smokiness is noticed on the tongue. This needs to be a regular at the LCBO.

Pours a dark brown /ruby red colour with a small head that disappears quickly. Caramel malt and peaty aroma. Flavour has caramel malt sweetness, peaty and light fruit. Medium body, creamy with a dry finish. Good beer.

Pours a hazy deep amber colour with a creamy beige head that disappears slowly and leaves big lacing. Aromas of plum and raisins, very fruity, with some light rusty water. Medium-bodied wet mouthfeel. The taste is less powerful than what the nose gives out. Mild bitterness the whole way with the fruit in the background and some light burnt wood comes out in the aftertaste. Really !??! There is 7% ABV in here ?? Pretty smooth overall and more refreshing than warming scottish ale.

500ml bottle. Puts a deep copper colored ale with ruby highlights in the glass. Decent sticky cap laces well. Aroma is online for the style – caramel maltiness with some light peat smoke and grassy hopping. Rich mouth feel, malty creamy character. Flavor has big malts in front – roasty, caramel, bready-nutty. Light hop balance, some small complexity mid palate – long wet malty finish. A really decent scotch ale in the traditional style.

Milton LCBO Outlet #1 (Milton, Ontario, Canada)
November 3, 2011
I tried this beer on November 3, 2011 after purchasing from one of my local LCBO outlets. The beer poured a translucent dark reddish-brown colour with very little head. The aroma was molasses, caramel, and smoked wood. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was smoke, molasses, and roasted nuts.
