Brewed primarily for Michael Jackson's Rare Beer Club, but also available in limited quantities on tap at the Greenwich Union pub. After India Pale Ale and London Porter the third great British export beer was Scotch Ale. It was brewed at lower temperatures than English ales and cold conditioned for six to eight weeks. Scotland's remoteness from the hop gardens of Southern England & the softness of the water of the Scottish lowlands made Scotch Ale the world's finest expression of malt flavour in beer.

97/93 on RB, not enough representation here. This was recommended by a trusted friend, though I then balked at the $12 price tag. I gotta say, it's pretty much what I think the style should taste like. Sweet, a little peat, toffee, chocolate, tobacco. Nice rich, full feel. A little bubbly, but swirling made it near perfect. 8% just right, warm not hot, full and sweet w/o being cloying. Ever so slight hints, and only hints, of astringency make this just short of elite. Still thoroughly enjoyed.

Draught@Black Door, Helsinki (6 % ABV). Deep amber colour, small head. Aroma is mild leathery notes, some toffee, grass and mild notes of spices. Flavour is strong sweet malts, mild syrup, some leathery notes as well as mild toffee. Pleasantly balanced.

Bottle from Hamiltons. Pours with a dark brown to black body topped by a medium thick, tan head with a good amount of lacing. It’s sweet and malty with a slight roasty, peaty note and a touch of bitterness. Medium bodied and smooth with a good amount of carbonation.
