On December 14, 1999, the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s death, yours truly brewed in honor of him a “small” beer recipe, which he enters in 1754 in his notebook. Small beer meant a light beer. I noticed immediately that it would be difficult for us to have a taste for it now, as it was brewed with only hops, water and molasses. Today, We are not accustomed to the kind of strange flavor of molasses and so I tuned the molasses down a bit with barley malt. On his birthday on February 22nd 2000 we tapped George Washington’s Own and some of you still remember a very tasty but different kind of beer. With waves of German immigrants old colonial beer styles were more and more forgotten and German beers became the dominant styles. Recently, I was researching the product of molasses because I thought that present day molasses which is the left over of sugar production and must have been less efficient in the British West Indies in colonial time. This means that the sugar content was higher and so the molasses was more appealing. The Brits sent the refined sugar back to England and the less valuable molasses to the colonies where it ended up in every General Store as a sweetener for all kind of purposes. Just recently I got my hands on a reproduction of colonial style molasses and as I have expected it, it is very different to what we get today. Now, I reformulated the recipe again , and made a strong ale.

Poured on tap (for $6 a pint) murky chocolate brownie with tall loose tan head. The aroma is interesting with unexpected sweet cherry and tart cherry skins mixing with brown sugar. The taste is a bit prickly with carbonation pushing up firm notes of brown sugar, maple spiciness, cherry fruit skin tannins, maple cookie, earthiness and then light amounts of maple syrup notes. Into the finish it picks up sort of cinnamon, chocolate and root beer flavor notes. Cool brew.
