more of the english style...more malt, less hops, very dark. nice balance here, and the alcohol presence asserts itself. overall, a good, if not spactacular barleywine.

02.19.05 2002 on tap at Toronado BWF Pretty dark brew but flat looking and feeling. Nice balance but nothing special. Alcohol was very present to me, especially for a 2002 beer, but that added to a nice peppery finish. It was a long day. Some peach, some citrus.

~2003 Batch.
Sampled at both the Kona Brewing Company brewpub on The Big Island of Hawai'i, and at the Koko Marina Pub (Kona Brewing Comapny's beer-bar in the South-Eastern corner of Oahu). Why two samples? Why, only two weren't enough to relish drinking this one!
Arrived in a smaller (9 oz, I'm guessing?) goblet, with only the most minimal flecks of foam gently resting on top of the damn-near black body. Hints of blood-red when held up to the light. An evil looking beer, this is indeed!
A little muted in the aroma -- enough to pique the senses into curosity about this beer, but nothing that would really knock you to floor in amazement. That's the job of the alcohol, which I'll discuss a little later.
But yes, this beer looks pretty damn evil -- and tastes even more so...! It's a shame that Kona doesn't do growlers, since I can easily see sipping on this while fighting the hordes of zombies and demons in "Doom 3". :)
Sturdy front-end, with a softer middle, and an almost sweet and yet filling backend. These personality shifts only highlight the truely and utterly *MASSIVE* malt bill of this beer. Like the locals who were with me on that Saturday at Kona said, "she's a sipper, alright!".
And then there's the avalanche of alcohol. In a word, this beer is no joke! A certian amount of planning and preparation is required for something like this, in that you best have a full stomache, and a few hours to kill after this..., in order to not get in trouble later on! This is especially true, since the 12.5%ABV doesn't come across as merely the equivlent of 3 "normal" beers....
A sleeping giant, that you need to respect, and drink gently. If you do, you'll be rewarded handsomely....! Recommended.
