Highlander Pale Ale is all natural with NO preservatives! This pale ale sits at 5% alcohol by volume (ABV) and colourwise is a very nice rendition of a British Pale Ale – reddish amber hues with a trend toward mahogany. The foam is a generous, mocha coloured and the bubbles are fairly small and tight. The nose is distinctly not North American – by that I mean, Brian has forgone the typical citrus hop nose you might normally find and has focused on malt. The aromas are licorice (anise) and dark bread (almost like toasted rye). As it warms, a few other characteristics start to show up – a hint of caramel and a touch of fruit (apricot). The body of Highlander is full – there are some burnt edges that are accented by coffee and dark chocolate. There's not a lot of bitterness but it does have a soft mouth coating tendency. Overall, a very drinkable pale ale on the British side of the style. It should go nicely this summer with a grilled steak or a spicy pork tenderloin.
