Captain Horatio Hamilton Ross was the first to look beyond the railroad as a source of transportation. He built and captained three separate steam powered paddle ships on the South Saskatchewan River, the last and greatest being the S.S. City Of Medicine Hat in 1907. He was also responsible for the crash of the S.S. City Of Medicine Hat which is widely considered to be the worst prairie nautical disaster of all time.
