Pours a dark, semi-transparent, warm chocolate brown with a thick, though not persistent, tan head. The sample I got fizzed quite a bit when I opened the bottle, so be careful! Malty aroma has a strong overtone of brown sugar and caramel as well as a hint of apple brandy. Flavor is malty with a definite brown sugar overtone and caramel, apple and nutty hints. It is slightly, but not cloyingly, sugary sweet. Texture is heavy-bodied and smooth, with just a little tingle, leaving a somewhat sweet finish.

It was late in the evening before the Plank was popped. Excited to try this intriguing ale I found it contained plenty of good qualities, just nothing extraordinary. A dark brown pour and a woody, roasted scent. Medium bodied and full, but with a bland aftertaste. The wood is very evident and there is a meaty smoke quality to compliment the dark roasted malts. Solid!
