A truly unique trans-atlantic pairing, Trousseau is a barley wine-style ale aged in wooden barrels sourced from the Madeira islands off the coast of Portugal. The beer’s nose of plums and toffee is perfectly complimented by vanilla and caramel-covered apple aromas from these barrels not frequently used for aging beer. Oxygen ingress during the barrel-aging process helps to accentuate flavors of tawny port, raisin pudding and toffee in this viscous, contemplative sipper.

    Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

750mL bottle pours with a murky mahogany colored body that supports a full supple tan head of foam. The aroma offers up earthy jammy grapes, molasses nuanced oak, more spicy oak and then reduced sugars like caramel and molasses. Damn! The taste delivers smooth soft grapy molasses and then spicy yet slightly blunted oak notes. Sweet baby Jesus this is money. To midway an earthy note and more jammy to almost date sweet fruitiness wander to the surface. Another sip and a flash of chocolate, slick sweet malts and a thin sweet sherry note team up with a sizable oakiness giving this another facet of tasty goodness. There needs to be more Madiera barrel aged barleywines with this balance . . . a lot more. Well done team.

Pours opaque coffee with a minimal tan head. Aroma delivers roast malt, coffee, caramel, and subtle woody tones. Flavor ups the caramel and downplays the coffee, sweet but not too so. Mouthfeel features firm body if not much fizz. What a lovely trousseau.
