Gilgamesh old ale has been aged in rum barrels while resting on its yeast in storage, which contributes to a full-bodied and malty character. Complex fruit esters reminiscent of figs and dates add to the richness and sweetness of this dark, strong wine-like ale. Gilgamesh, a legendary king of Mesopotamia, is the central character in The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the earliest surviving works of literature. Deliberately long-aged, the brew team took inspiration for Gilgamesh from several different versions of the robust, malty Old Ale style.

Single from the LCBO with a paper label and tag. Pours a deep copper colour with a smaller frothy beige head, decent retention, but not much sticking to the glass (a little foam). Caramel malt nose with heavy raisin notes, wood from the barrel and spices from the rum itself. Lots of dark fruits (raisins, figs, plums) in the taste, with some molasses, caramel and spices. Mild rum lingers on the tongue in the aftertaste. Alcohol well-hidden with average carbonation, a smooth mouthfeel, but quite on the wet side.

The beer pours a semi-translucent copper colour with a creamy brown head that lasts. The aroma is smoked wood, caramel, molasses, and rum. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The first thing I notice in the flavour is the heat of the alcohol, followed by sweet molasses tones, smoke, and dark fruit. Best Beau's beer I've had in a long time. -

Pours a small frothy cap and has a murky brown/coppery appearance. Has a woodsy, raisin like aroma with hints of resin and spice hops. Flavours of raisins, dark roasted malts, a bit of yeast. The rum does come through a bit from the barrel, maybe a little too faint. Pretty smooth and slick mouthfeel. Pretty good
