Had this while taking my future Father-In-Law to dinner at the San Diego Brewing Company. While I never heard of this before, it does stand to reason that Ballast Point would do a Scottish or Scotch ale sometime in their history. So ordered up a pint.
While this looked interesting enough, I don't think it quite met all of the style requirements closely enough. With either a Scottish Ale or a Scotch Ale (no, they are *not* the same thing), malt needs to be in the driver's seat, with only enough hops to balance out the malt, and whatever smoke/scorched/oak/caramel tones that are present. And while this did have a bare precepitble hint of (peat) smoke, this is otherwise more akin to just a standard English Ale -- complex yeasty fruit-n'-nuts character and everything. Good drinkability, at least.
Interesting enough, but just doesn't fit in with the style guidelines, nor the otherwise impecible Ballast Point reputation. (Note: sometimes referred to as "Piper Down Scottish Ale").

I've waited a while to have one of bp's non distributed brews and so i have one. Butterfinger is the base flavor here with a watermelon feel, gets bitter in time, purple/deep brown/black combo of color and the fucked up thing is that this smelled just like a freshly cracked mgd.
