Rated in Sept. 2014. The 50cl caged and corked Bastard in the Rye bottle (2014 vintage with 2013 Templeton Rye Barrels) pours with a murky amber brown body that supports a light tan head. The aroma offers up lots of whiskey as well as some oak, vanilla and then echoes of Arrogant Bastard Ale (ABA) malts and pine hoppiness. The taste is soft and sweet and delivers sweet whiskey, mild spicy oak, sugary sweetness, sweet vanilla and then thin ribbons of pine hops and ABA malts and roasted maltiness. This ends with lingering whiskey and mild pine hops mixed with faint maltiness. I’d love to try this with a lot less barrel character and find out how ABA evenly balanced with the barrel notes turns out.
