301 Beer Academy Kölsch Blonde Ale Canada Kölsch 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

I went all the way to Toronto to try several of the new Beer Academy beers, the kolsch was one of them. Like most koslches, this is a refreshing lagered ale. Plenty of grains and yeast in the aroma and some sweet fruit hints. Flavour is similar, and has a dry wine like finish. An interesting take on the style.

302 Southern Tier Imperial Mokah United States Imperial Stout 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Part of the 2012 LCBO Fall Release. ABV on bottle is 11.2%. A nice black pour with a small tan cap. Lots of coffee and chocolate in the aroma. Alcohol is present in the taste along with a hint of coffee and chocolate. The label says this is a mix of the Java and Choklat. Having never tried either of those, this doesn't make me want to try them at all.

303 Abbaye des Rocs La Montagnarde (Ambree) Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

A recent find at Ontario liquor stores, and certainly not in the same class as the brune. It pours a hazed light rust colour with a generous beige cap. Lots of yeast in the aroma with hints of fruit and spices. Flavour is similar with the grain and yeast dominating, and the fruit tones in the background. Would not buy again.

304 Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Marzen Germany Rauchbier 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Tried in Germany. Pours a beautiful copper colour, almost clear, and a generous white head. The smoky wood aroma hits you as soon as the cap somes off. Notes of light fruit, malt, and earthy hops also apparent. The flavour has bacon-like notes in it, as well as fruit and grains. The smokiness certainly takes away from the Marzen character.

305 Amsterdam Big Wheel Deluxe Amber Beer Canada Amber Ale 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

This was one of the last ‘regular’ beers of Amsterdam before they embraced what ‘craft’ really meant. This isn’t to say it’s a bad beer, but it’s certainly not their best beer. A golden hued copper colour with a slight haze, and a weak off-white cap. Lots of caramel in the nose along with ample amounts of bisuit malts and earthy hops. It tastes like it smells, although the caramel flavours are a tad sweet for me.

306 C'est What Old Town Brown Canada Brown Ale 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

A beer from days of yore, or so it appeared on the menu as such. A mild brown that was flavourful, but not too bitter. The beer was a mahogany coloured beer with a medium sized tan coloured cap. Aroma had some bready notes, some coffee, and some roast to it while the flavour was more akin to sweet dark chocolate with a hint of smokiness.

307 Whiprsnapr Root of Evil Pre-prohibition Lager Canada California Common / Steam 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

You have to like the honesty with this brew. They tell you up front that they use flaked corn in the brewing process, so it is no surprise that you get some notes of corn in both the aroma and flavour. It’s a dark metallic gold colour, quite clear, and is topped by a small white cap. There is some smokiness in the air along with some citrusy hops, grains, and hints of corn. The flavour brings both the corn and smokiness more to the front. Not bad, but I feel sorry for pre-prohibition drinkers if this was a steady diet of what was around.

308 Railway City Sham-Bock Canada Bock 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

A decent alternative to the plethora of green beers that one sees around St. Patrick’s Day. Railway City is better known for their ales than their lagers so this one will be a new one for me from them. It pours a deep mahogany colour, murky, with a this light brown head. Lots of dark fruit and roasted notes in the aroma, with hints of bread, yeast, and maple syrup. The flavour is very sweet as the maple syrup really shines over all the other flavours.

309 Murphy's Irish Stout Ireland Dry Stout 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

I tried this recently after having known it existed for the last 50 years, and was kind of disappointed to find out it is now a Heineken product. Oh well. It isn’t that bad of a stout however. A very dark brown beer with a cap that’s light tan coloured and creamy. Typical Irish stout aroma of coffee and chicory and little else. Flavour falls in line too. I wish I had tried it 30 years ago.

310 Cowbell Brewing Pomegranate Honeysuckle Fruit Sour Canada Wild Ale 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

The beer pours a dark murky golden pink colour that will remind you of grapefruit juice, or at least it did with me. Aromatically, they have hidden the honeysuckle quite well, but the pomegranate and cherry notes jump out. The flavour is all about the fruit though. The grainy malt notes and the yeasty notes are all overwhelmed by the fruit. So....not a bad beer at all.

311 Big Rock McNally's Extra Canada Irish Ale 3.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

This is a beautiful see-through reddish beer with an off-white head. Teh aroma is strong on the malt with very little hoppy tones, if any. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied, maybe a little high in carbonation. The flavour is a bit boring. More malrt than anything else with a hint of spice.

312 Unibroue Raftman Canada Smoked Ale 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

The Raftman is an murky orangy gold colour with a light head. The aroma is that of malt, scotch, and smoked wood. The flavour is weak smoked wood with a little hoppy bitterness to round it out.

313 BrewDog Tokyo* United Kingdom Imperial Stout 3.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

A powerful beer, but one of the thinnest watery stouts I have ever come across. It pours a motor oil black, but with a thinner consistency than say a DFH World Wide Stout. No head at all. Alcohol and roasted malt dominate the aroma, but one can also notice hints of vanilla, coffee, and molasses. The flavour is very sweet with more than a hint of alcohol. Not very balanced. Another epic failure by BrewDog

314 Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA United States Imperial IPA 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

If this was just an IPA, it would be a great beer, but it falls short on the 'Imperial' nature. A murky orange-gold pour with a thin creamy light tan head with a citrusy hop aroma, some spices, and some sweet malt. The flavour is a good bitter citrusy tone but not too strong. I could have used more bitterness for the 'Imperial' to be taken seriously

315 Jenlain D'Or France Belgian Strong Ale 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

A recent find at the LCBO. Very similar to the La Chouffe also available at the LCBO right now. A yeasty blonde ale with alcohol definitely presnt in the aroma and flavour. Next time I'll choose the La Chouffe.

316 Black Creek Pumpkin Ale Canada Spiced Beer 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Part of the 2012 LCBO Fall Seasonal lineup. Not a huge fan of pumpkin beers and this is one of three at the LCBO this fall. A copper coloured ale with a decent sized cap. Pumpkin pie is in the aroma and the flavour. Spices are noticeably weak leaving this a beer to avoid.

317 Augustijn Blonde Belgium Belgian Ale 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Purchased at Liquor Control Board of Ontario store. Part of a Holiday 6 pack. Very tripel-like in looks, smell, and flavour. A hazed dark gold pour with an average sized white head. Aroma is yeast, grain, citrus, and light fruit. Flavour is very yeasty with notes of grass and light fruit, and a spicy finish.

318 Biere du Boucanier Blonde Ale Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

A very strong beer and the alcohol is noticeable in both the aroma and the flavour. A clouded medium gold pour with a weak white cap. The aroma is dominated by malt and yeast with the alcohol overpowering the spices and yeast. Flavour is grains and alcohol with the yeast and spices secondary.

319 Amsterdam Natural Blonde Lager Canada Lager 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

I've had several Amsterdam products over the years and I can't believe this is the first I've rated. A clear yellow beer with a white head. Lots of biscuit malt and flowery hops in the nose. A rather bland grainy lager that was reminiscent of Canadian craft brewers late in the 20th century.

320 Bell City Eureka Cream Ale Canada Cream Ale 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

A canned beer and the can feels funny, not sure what they finish it with but the can has an enamel feel. The beer pours a clear copper colour with a generous thick foamy white head. Toffee, sour grains, and light fruit make up the aromatic qualities of this beer. Flavour is metallic caramel with grains

321 Old Tomorrow Canadian Pale Ale Canada American Pale Ale 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

The shellac or whatever it is on the can is a turn-off, almost made me put it back on the shelf. The beer is clear, amber in colour, with a decent sized head, which is whitish in colour. Heavy caramel atoma, some biscuity notes, and some earthy hops. The taste is very malty, grains aplenty with hints of sweet caramel and bitter citrus. Not something I would try again.

322 Old Tomorrow Monty's Golden Ryed Ale Canada Rye Beer 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

The second bneer by these guys this week, and just as unmemoprable as the first. Colour is clear, light amber, with a light ecru coloured cap. Herbal notes dominate the aroma with hints of rye, peppery notes, and cereal malts. Flavour is 'meh' at best. Lots there to taste like rye, citrus, caramel, and spices, but none of it stands out as dominant enough to mae me want more.

323 Durham Signature Ale Canada English Pale Ale 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

This is the only beer I’ve seen from Durham in bottles. A light copper colour, clear, with a thin white head. Aroma is earthy hops, cereal malt, and yeast. Flavour is a nice balance between the malty sweetness and the hoppy bitterness but the feeling is that something is missing, it doesn’t hit you like it should.

324 Granville Island Island Lager Canada Lager 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Just what the world needs more of….bland pale lagers. There really isn’t a whole lot to say about this one. It is a medium gold colour, clear, with a generous snow white cap that lasts long enough to spell ‘it’. The aroma is typical grainy malt with hits of European hops and yeast. Flavour is quite grainy too with metallic and acidic off-tastes in the mix.

325 Granville Island Lions Winter Ale Canada English Strong Ale 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

At 5.5%, this comes in at a very weak ABV for an English style winter ale, especially in a day and age where a ‘light and refreshing’ summer saison can come in at 6%. A transparent dark amber pour with a slightly creamy off-white head. Light fruity aroma with hints of caramal and vanilla coupled with some floral hops. Flavour is spicy caramel malt, a little vanilla, and a little hop bitterness. Still, not a winter warmer by any stretch.
