451 | Renaissance Elemental Porter | New Zealand | Porter | 3.9
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 This is their prize winning porter, and while it's very good, it's not a beer that I would die for. A blackish-brown pour is topped by a thin dark brown creamy head. Burnt wood, butterscotch, coffee and roasted malt make up the aroma. Flavour is neither too sweet, or harshly bitter, combining the coffee and butterscotch flavours into a well balanced beer. |

452 | Renaissance Marlborough Pale Ale | New Zealand | Imperial IPA | 3.7
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 This pours a clear amber colour with a small tan ring for a cap. Probably the reddest and clearest DIPA I've ever had. Aroma contains quite a bit of pine with a backdrop of alcohol, grapefruit, and peppery spices. Flavour is caramel, grapefruit, and spices. While you can smell the alcohol, it can't really be tasted. |

453 | Renaissance Perfection | New Zealand | English Pale Ale | 3.7
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7 So, the American Pale Ale is under strength, and an over strength English Pale Ale is their so called perfection. Nope, can't tell that New Zealand's a Commonwealth country. A deep amber pour, slightly hazed, is topped off by a thin cream coloured cap. Aroma has some floral hop notes, some caramel, and some grains. Not very inviting. Flavour however is very well balanced between the hops and malt and is quite good, yet somehow, still not perfect. |

454 | Renaissance Stonecutter Scotch Ale | New Zealand | Scottish Ale | 4.4
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9 It is very hard to go wrong with a well made Scotch ale, and this is a well made Scotch ale. A clear reddish-brown colour, dark, with a creamy tan coloured cap. Aroma is peat, smoky, and fruity with some molasses thrown in for good measure. Flavour is sweet malt, molasses, and the smokiness is noticed on the tongue. This needs to be a regular at the LCBO. |

455 | Renaissance Voyager | New Zealand | IPA | 3.4
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 This is the New Zealand version of the British version of an IPA. A clear amber colured pour with a small tan head, very similar to the MPA had last night. Aroma is more citrusy than piney, with spices and caramel present. Flavour is quite similar to the MPA as well with caramel, citrus, and spices. The flavours in the MPA were definitely 'fuller' however. |

456 | Rickard's Cardigan | Canada | Spiced Beer | 2.8
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6 If there was ever a contest for the stupidest name of a beer, and the accompanying design, this would be a finalist. The beer behind the name/design isn’t all that bad. It pours a light amber colour with a thin tan ring for a cap. Cinnamon and nutmeg are the first thing to hit the nose and then comes the grains, and unfortunately, some old plain hops. The flavour is weak with the spices dominating the hops and malt. Better than most macro products however. |

458 | Rickard's Honey Brown | Canada | Brown Ale | 2.9
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 I think this was the second Rickard’s product after the Red, and it disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared. The pours is clear, golden-brown in colour, with a weak off-white coloured cap. Aroma is dominated by grains and caramel with weak notes of floral hops. The flavour is sweeter than the aroma would indicate with hints of caramel, and honey. |

459 | Rickard's Lederhosen | Canada | Marzen / Oktoberfest | 2.6
Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5 Is this supposed to be simply a take on German styles in general or is it supposed to be an authentic attempt at a Marzen? It fails if the latter. A nice golden pour with some red highlghts, and a creamy white head that lasts. Aroma has more hops than a true marzen, and they compete unfavourably with the sweet malt. Flavour is the same for me, too hop forward for a true marzen instead of the malt being the star. |

460 | Rickard's Oakhouse Winter Lager | Canada | Vienna / Amber Lager | 2.6
Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5 This is supposed to be a seasonal winter warmer, and based on that description, it fails miserably. The glass is holding a cloudy light copper coloured beer with a one inch frothy white head. Weak notes of vanilla, grass, and musty hops permeate the air. The flavour leans towards the bitter side of the spectrum with very little malt or vanilla influence. |

464 | Rochefort Trappistes 10 | Belgium | Abbey Quadrupel | 4.9
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10 This is an excellent beer, I've always passed over it for some reason or another. Cloudy dark brown in colour, ruby hints at the edges and a thin white ring. The aroma knocked me out....plums, apples, pears, sugar, and sweet malt. The flavour was more of the same. No hint of alcohol (or hops). Heavenly! |

465 | Rodenbach Grand Cru | Belgium | Flanders Red | 4.7
Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9 An ezquisite Flemish sour by any definition of the style. A cool looking copper colour with a big-bubbled pinkish head. The aroma was tart cherries, some vinegar, and cereal malt. The taste is amazing, tart fruit up front (or sides I guess), followed by a lingering bitter finish. |

467 | Russian River Pliny the Younger | United States | Imperial IPA | 3.6
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 The best thing about this beer is the ornamental lamp-like growler. After you finish the beer you can put a candle in it. A golden beer, almost clear, and plenty of head. The aroma is citrusy hops, some malt, but definitely hoppy. The flavour is all hops, and not very well balanced. |

468 | Schlitz Red Bull Malt Liquor | United States | Strong Lager | 1.6
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3 I have had the Canadian version of this once or twice (Sleeman's used to contract brew Schlitz and Stroh's products) and it was awful both times. An ABV that qualifies as a 'Light' beer for a Belgian, is grossly alcoholic in this concoction |

469 | Schneider Weisse Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock | Germany | Eisbock | 4.4
Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8 THis deep mahogany pour is one awesome beer. A thin tight tan head tops it off....wisps of sweet wheat malt, banana and compliment one another as it tingles on the senses. A slightly sweet flavour greets the tongue with hints of light fruit followed by a bitter finish. Very little alcohol evidence for 12% |

470 | Schneider Weisse Tap 6: Aventinus Weizen Doppelbock | Germany | Weizenbock | 4.4
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9 The Schneider Weisse original has always been a favourite of mine and recently I've had the chance to try the dopple and eisbocks. Neither was a letdown. The beer is brown, hazy, and smells of wheat and maple syrup. The flavour is sweet wehat malt, some spices, and light fruit. |

472 | Scotch Irish Black Irish Plain Porter | Canada | Porter | 3.9
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 Scotch Irish were a master at roasted malt beers in my opinion, or at least, I enjoyed all that I tried. It pours a solid black coca-cola like colour with a tight creamy cap that lasts a while. Loads of roasted malt and chocolate in the aroma with a little vanilla and licorice. The tastebuds get much the same experience as the liquid flows over them…lots of coffee and chocolate notes leading to a bitter finish. |

473 | Scotch Irish Corporal's Bitter Brown Ale (Corporal Punishment) | Canada | Brown Ale | 3.9
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 The Scotch Irish brown beer. A deep murky mahogany liquid fills the glass topped by a good inch of foaming light brown bubbles. Roasted malt, nuts, and resiny hops fill the nasal cavity with delight while the tastebuds yearn for their sampling of caramel, roasted malt, and a bitter chicory finish. If this is Corporal Punishment, sign me up! |

474 | Scotch Irish John By Imperial Stout | Canada | Imperial Stout | 4.8
Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10 Scotch Irish made two legendary Imperial Stouts, and John By was the easier of the two to find. It was a dark brown beer, almost black with a thick creamy brown head. Dark fruits and coffee filled the air with aroma while both tantalized the tongue with flavour. A hint of black licorice made it all complete. |

475 | Scotch Irish Session Ale / Scotch Irish Dry Hop Border Bitter | Canada | Bitter | 3.8
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 Today, a session ale means it’s probably a low ABV IPA or APA, but back in the day it referred to a well made flavourful English Bitter. This is lighter in colour than most British bitters coming in at a light to medium gold with a good sized off-white cap topping it all off. Floral hops, some clean caramel notes and light fruity notes comprise the aromatic component. Flavour is here is spades when compared to light lagers with notes of caramel and toffee leading to a citrusy finish |
