7776 Aass Juleøl (klasse F) Norway Vienna / Amber Lager 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Norwegian Christmas beers are brewed in the original strong (appr. 6,2% ABV) and a watered down (appr. 4,5%) version. Make sure you get the strong versions (applies to all breweries) - they are just so much better! Aass is the best of them all. Spicy, caramelly, rich and rounded flavour that goes well with traditional Scandinavian Christmas fare.

7777 Paulaner Hefeweizen Germany Hefeweizen 3.5

Slightly sweeter than I expected (and would have preferred), this is still a very drinkable Hefe. Lovely aroma, generally a good beer but somewhat overrated.

7778 Aass Bock Norway Bock 4.7

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

The ABV in Norway is 6,5%. This is the best Norwegian beer you can get. Beautiful, very dark reddish brown colour, moderate carbonation. Complex aroma and flavour, hints of spices, oak and liqourice. Very well balanced. Great aftertaste.

A strange metallic bitterness makes this hyped lager no favourite of mine.

7780 Chimay Cinq Cents (White) Belgium Abbey Tripel 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Spicy and peppery are the key words here. An interesting brew, something quite out of the ordinary - but given the choice, I would most definitely still prefer the Chimay Blue.

7781 Chimay Grande Réserve (Blue) Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.7

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

An outstanding beer, very close to "perfect". I agree with all the positive things said by other reviewers, and has little more to add. The spicy, oaky complexity of the aroma and flavour is "out of this world". Wonderful, lingering aftertaste. Alcohol is well hidden. Simply exceptional!

7782 Samuel Smith Imperial Stout United Kingdom Imperial Stout 4.5

A beer for extremists - if the brewers / maltsters had roasted the malt more, we'd be talking about cremation! An excellent after dinner beer, could stand in for a cup of espresso. Aftertaste lasts forever. One bottle is enough for the evening

A typical golden "get drunk fast" strong lager. Totally uninteresting.

7784 Duvel Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.3

Like most belgian ales more heavily carbonated than I appreciate, otherwise this is an excellent beer! Dangerously drinkable - hence the name.

7785 Oakham Jeffrey Hudson Bitter United Kingdom Blonde Ale 5.0

Cask conditioned: Fruity, flowery, extremely refeshing English bitter. Can't think of any faults with it.

7786 Orkney Dark Island United Kingdom Scottish Ale 4.3

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

This one of the very best (moderate strength) beers I've ever had (cask conditioned). Aroma and flavour of dried fruits, coffee and liqourice. Can't think of any faults with it. Rerate: 500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.6%. Black colour, ruby in the highlights, big to moderate tan head. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, hints of peaty smoke and oak, not as fruity as the cask version, but nice. The flavour has the same elements as the aroma, but here distinct fruity and vinous (claret) notes come through too. The finish is slightly acidic with moderate but sufficient hops.

7787 EKU 28 Germany Eisbock 2.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 3

Some initially pleasant oak and malts flavours are soon overwhelmed by a revolting alcoholic syrupy sweetness, making it almost impossible to finish a bottle. The eisbock style is not something I'll sample again - unless it's for free.

7788 Samuel Smith Taddy Porter United Kingdom Porter 2.9

The saltiness in the finish / aftertaste ruins the pleasure of drinking this beer. I may like salty food with a beer, not salt IN the beer itself!

7789 Young's Oatmeal Stout United Kingdom Oatmeal Stout 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Bottle served at the BC Beer Café in Helsinki. Beer is pitch black (okay, VERY dark brown), low to no head. There's some irritating carbonation that pricks on the tongue - if given the choice, I would most likely prefer some nitrogen in a beer of this style (I know that many of you will disagree with me on that!) Moderate roast aroma, the rounded flavour has some coffee notes with a strong oatmeal presence, hardly any bitterness to match the sweetness. Porridge aftertaste. Very filling - I had it 1 hour after a solid breakfast, and it was like having another full meal ("liquid oatmeal porridge"). Of course it's not a bad beer, but as my expectations were sky high, you'll have to forgive me for being a bit disappointed.

7790 Marston's Oyster Stout United Kingdom Oyster Stout 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Bottle conditioned, opaque black (= very dark brown), pours with a good tan head that does not last long. Surprisingly fruity and vinous complex aroma of plums / prunes with notes of seaweed, cocoa, colombian coffee and cigars. Light bodied for a stout, but very refreshing. Moderate roast coffee flavour, quite dry, moderate roast bitterness in the aftertaste, a bit short. Must be a good accompaniment with all kinds of food - not only oysters.
