Stylish 750 ml bottle, shared with Tom at Øl & Mat-festivalen, Oslo. ABV 5.1%. Cloudy golden colour, moderate white head. Typical witbier aroma and flavour, notes of coriander and orange peel, hardly any noticeable hops. A hint of diacetyl is not what I want in a witbier. Drinkable, but lacks "bite". Boring.

Medium sweet flavour, not cloying. Notes of malts, caramel, oak and bourbon, hints of dark dried fruits. Low bitterness.

Aroma of lactic acid and over-ripe raspberries. Very sour flavour, lactic acid galore, notes of over-ripe raspberries, "empty" finish. Won't buy again.

Shared bottle at RBNAG 2011 in Oslo, ABV 6.1%. Bronze colour. Well hopped aroma and flavour. This is a nice strong ale in a "typically English" style, well balanced between the malts and hops: Very good. This is a kind of beer I always appreciate - even in the course of a long tasting with lots of beers.

330 ml bottle, from Dagli’brugsen Skødstrup. ABV is 8.2%. Black colour, moderate head of good retention. Pleasant aroma of fruity hops and dark malts with some roasty notes of mild coffee, hints of caramel. Rich flavour, dark malts with some initial sweetness, then roasty coffee notes with a hint of liquorice, moderate bitterness in the finish.

330 ml bottle, probably from Dagli’brugsen Skødstrup, as Thisted Brown Ale Nr. 1. ABV is 6.9%. Ingredients include sugar, liquorice and antioxidants E300 and E223. Very dark brown to ruby colour, large and creamy tan head. Very malty aroma with strong notes of caramel. The flavour is also very malty, notes of caramel and liquorice, hints of mild Christmas spices. Very modest bitterness.

Aroma of birch sap / birch leaves, pine needles and sprucetips, a hint of bog myrtle / sweet gale. The flavour is moderately citric and medium sweet, with the same elements as the aroma. Interesting beer, without hops.

Aroma of sweetish malts, sea buckthorn berries and sweet gale / bog myrtle. The flavour is not as sweet as the aroma made me fear, fruity notes of sea buckthorn berries, fairly distinct notes of bog myrtle, minimal bitterness (hops are not on the ingredients list).

Malty flavour too, distinct caramel sweetness but not too much, moderate herbal hops and a little alcohol in the finish. A faint hint of smoke.

330 ml bottle, probably from Dagli’brugsen Skødstrup. ABV is 7.6%. Copper colour, large head with an orangey hue. The fairly strong aroma is fruity, mixed with distinct notes of caramel malts. The flavour is malty and rather sweet with plenty of caramel, the alcohol is noticeable. Bitter hops in the finish, becomes slightly metallic in the aftertaste.

500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8.0%. Beautiful deep reddish brown colour, moderate off-white head with good retention. Nice aroma of caramel, also mild spicy notes. The flavour is spicy and complex with notes of caramel and dark dried fruits, esp. raisins. Some hoppy bitterness in the finish, slightly sharp in the aftertaste. Overall very good - I am astonished that it is not rated higher.

A pleasant Danish Christmas brew, sampled in June(!). Goes very well with the traditional Danish Christmas dinner, roast duck and pickled red cabbage (which I also had in June!). Related to Norwegian Christmas brews, but slightly less spicy. Nice caramelly sweetness, not too much. Rerate Dec. 2002: Amber/golden colour, moderate head. Light bodied, distinct bitterness that balances the sweetness quite well.

500 ml bottle. as Thisted Limfjords IPA (Overgæret Baltic IPA), from BilkaToGo, Skalborg. ABV is 6.5%. Very dark brown to black colour, large to moderate tan head. Aroma of roast malts, chocolate, mild coffee, piney hops. Flavour with the same elements, also citric / grapefruity hops, good bitterness. Pleasant to drink, would buy again.

A heavy mouthful from one of Denmark's few independent regional breweries, which I'm always happy to support every summer. A nice region with nice people who make several acceptable beers - this is their very best one. However, I have to admit that Gl. Carlsberg Imperial Stout Porter is slightly better. RERATE: Characterized as a 'double brown stout' by the brewery, this stout / (Baltic) porter (in Denmark that's more or less the same thing) is really so different from Gl. Carlsberg Imperial Stout Porter (now called Carls Porter) that it's a bit unfair to compare the two. The smoked flavour of the Limfjordsporter is really something out of the ordinary. I've never had a rauchbier (*I have now!), but I guess this one has some elements in common with that style (* i.e. it's smoky, but not smoked meat like the Aecht Schlenkerla, thank God). I highly recommend a sample of Limfjords-Porter! RERATE 2: Hey, this beer grows on you! Black (okay, extremely dark brown) as the deadliest of sins, moderate thick tan head, aroma and flavour of tar, resin and midsummer bonfires. Overwhelming smoked bitterness. Tastes like it's been stored in a Viking ship through seven battles and a round-the-world tour. Simply outstanding.
