1802 | Grolsch Premium Blond | Netherlands | Pale Lager | 1.8
Aroma: 2 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4 500ml can
4.0% ABV
Milton LCBO Outlet #1 (Milton, Ontario, Canada)
April 27, 2010
First of all, I almost picked up one of these 2 years ago, and at that time the ABV was 4.6%. Tis can looks exactly the same as the one from 2 years ago, except the ABV is now only 4%. The beer poured a translucent pale yellow-gold with a huge generous white bubbly head. The aromatic features were grassy malt, wet steel, and a tad hint of hops. The mouthfeel was weak bodied, almost watery, and highly carbonated. The flavour was weak grainy malt and water. |

1803 | Carling Old Vienna / Molson OV | Canada | Pale Lager | 2.0
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 4 April 5, 1991
Beer Store #4003 (Guelph, Ontario, Canada – Municipal Street)
355ml bottle
5.0% ABV
$1.00
My goal in June 2007 was to rate all the beer I've tried. That meant rating the bad ones along with the good ones. This is one of the bad ones. Where I went to University, this beer had the raunchy nickname of "'Ol Vag___", but I was not informed of that until after trying it. This is one of the old Carling O'Keefe products (Carling O'Keefe's Ol' Vienna Lager) that was popular in the late 70s and early 80s complete with television commercials. It pours a weak yellow colour with little head. The aroma was very skunky (every time I have tried this). The taste is rather skunky as well, not a friend to the mouth at all. Strong carbonation, and very little discernable maltiness. The more I thought about it, the less I liked it. After a couple, I was able to safely declare it among the worst Canadian beer I had ever tasted. |

1804 | Molson Golden | Canada | Pale Lager | 2.2
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4 April 1, 1987
Gift
341ml bottle
5.0% ABV
$0.00
I tried this beer during the 1980s when they launched a large Canadian campaign to get beer drinkers drinking Golden again. The campaign did nothing more than make fun of the beer's name (Moslen Godlen, Molden Golson, etc). This was also the brand featured on all The Molson's commercials. Sadly, this beer is no longer part of Molson Canada's lineup (as per their website). Anyway, the last time I tried this, the beer was golden in colour with almost no head. The aroma was weak with a grassy tinge to it. It was very crisp and clear on the tongue with weak carbonation. The taste was also weak, not watery, but not very beer-y either. It eventually went on to be associated with 'Old Man's beer' along with Labatt 50. I would give a better rating, but the beer was just not that memorable. Not bad, but not worth a second taste. |

1805 | Molson Dry | Canada | Pale Lager | 3.0
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 September 29, 1994
Don Cherry’s Restaurant (Milton, Ontario, Canada)
341ml bottle
5.5% ABV
$2.85
This used to be a slightly better than average beer at an average price. First available in the early 90s when dry beer was all the rage. They have revised it in recent years with a slightly different recipe and a lower price. Originally advertised as a beer with no aftertaste. They lied. Molson Dry pours a light golden colour with little or no head. The aroma is pleasant to the nostrils, not overly powerful. The flavour and texture are very smooth. This is a beer that goes down easily......too easily. An old standby. |

1806 | Moosehead | Canada | Pale Lager | 2.4
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 5 July 1, 1992
Gift
341ml bottle
5.0% ABV
$0.00
At best this is an average beer with an average look and taste. I’ve heard it was much better before interprovincial barriers caused the mass production. It is not a beer that I would go out of my way to buy, but if it is all that is available, it can be quite refreshing. It pours a golden yellow colour that is very clear. The aroma is grainy with some yeasty aftersmells. The mouthfeel is crisp and clear as a lager should be, some mild carbonation on the tongue. The taste is bland and non-descript with some hints of malt and grass. |

1807 | Carling Black Label | Canada | Pale Lager | 3.7
Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8 November 10, 1990
341ml bottle
5.0% ABV
$0.00
This was a very good beer. It poured a translucent golden yellow colour into the glass with very little head. The aroma had a malty, earthy aroma...nothing spectacular. The mouthfeel is silky smooth and crisp with some mild carbonation that grabs the tongue in all the right places. The taste was that of a full bodied beer with a malty grainy flavour that lasted through the entire glass. Like the majority of macro lagers in North America, this beer is best enjoyed cold. |

1808 | Fosters Lager | Australia | Pale Lager | 3.4
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 September 22, 1987
Gift
355ml bottle
5.0% ABV
$0.00
Brewed in Canada by the Carling O'Keefe Brewing Company
As Paul Hogan used to call it, 'The Golden Throat Charmer' and 'Australian for Beeya'.

First off, this tastes best very cold. This pours a beautiful golden colour with an offwhite head that sticks around. It has a nice hoppy aroma that I find distinctive. It dances on the tongue with some mild carbonation that isn't overpowering that winds into a crisp lager-y feel. The taste is crisp and clean with some malty tones and tastes great (and filling). It does have one hell of an aftertaste that takes some getting used to. This was my beer of choice in the late 80s and early 90s, and I still visit it every now and then (like this afternoon).

When I originally tried this it was brewed in Canada by Carling O'Keefe Brewing Company under license from Elder's Brewery in Australia. Elders eventually gave a huge sum of money to Molson Brewing Company to buy Carling O'Keefe (with some money from the Miller Brewing Company). When I did my Ph.D in Tennessee, I saw Foster's in the supermarket..............it was brewed by Molson in Canada (and distributed in Reston, Virginia). |

1809 | Labatt Blue | Canada | Pale Lager | 2.1
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4 April 7, 2022
473ml can
5.0% ABV
Canned On: December 1, 2021
LCBO Outlet #649 (Milton, Ontario, Canada – Sobey’s Plaza)
$2.20
A more experienced beer reviewer’s review! The beer poured from a can a very weak golden yellow with a generous bubbly white head which quickly disappeared with little to no lacing. The aroma was weak grains, weak hops, and some acidic notes. The mouthfeel was weak to medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour was mainly grains with weak hop and metallic notes. Certainly not a beer I would want to drink with any regularity, but not as bad as some other macro lagers either.

Original Review
First Tried in 1987
341ml bottle
5.0% ABV
Not a beer that thrills me. First off.............I have to admit that of Canada's two mega-breweries, I have generally supported Molson. In fact, I've only tried three Labatt products, and all of them were only tried once. Blue, John Labatt Classic, and Labatt Copper (you all remember Labatt Copper don't you? 1995? National campaign which had Copper X and Copper Y and beer drinkers voted which was their favourite? and the winner lasted all of 5 months in beer stores). Anyway, I digress. Blue is supposedly Canada's beer of choice. The aroma was malty, but dissipated quickly. The colour was a very pale yellow with a slight head. The mouthfeel was very watery suggesting that if you enjoy the flavour, you can probably down these by the case. The flavour was nothing to write home about as it too was watery with only slight malt tones. All in all a forgettable beer. |

1810 | Budweiser | United States | Pale Lager | 1.9
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4 April 7, 2022
Brewed in Canada by Labatt Brewing Company
473ml can
5.0% ABV
Canned On: March 14, 2022
LCBO Outlet #649 (Milton, Ontario, Canada – Sobey’s Plaza)
$2.70
A more experienced beer reviewer’s review! The beer pours a very pale straw colour with a bubbly white head which disappeared in mere seconds. Considering it was canned less than a month ago, that surprises me. There was no lacing. The aroma is grains and herbal hops. Not much else. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is grass and rice. I can actually taste the rice! I didn’t like this beer the first couple of times I tried it (the Labatt version in 1987 and the American version in 1992), and it won’t be a regular for me, but it really isn’t all that bad. I can see why billions and billions drink it. Score adjusted up to 1.9

Original Review
341ml bottle
5.0% ABV
Guelph, Ontario, Canada
January 21, 1987 (Canadian Version) / August 16, 1992 (American version)
I have had two versions of this beer, the Anheuser-Busch brewed version in the bars of Memphis, Tennessee, and the "brewed in Canada by Labatt under license...." I'll take the Canadian version hands down. Sadly, the Canadian version sucks too. For a beer that is as heavily advertised as it is, and sells as much as it does, the rating here says it all. This is America's finest pisswater (Labatt Blue is Canada's finest pisswater). It amazes me when I go out with friends, there is always one who orders Bud. Take a gamble people, try one of the beers on tap you've never heard of....they're great (with all due respect to Tony the Tiger). This is one of those beers I will go out of my way to avoid. Having it in your fridge is a great way to get taken off my Christmas card list! |

Lacing is generous. The aroma is bready malts, yeast, and herbal hops. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is grainy malt and light bitter hops. Original score upgraded a bit.

original review
341ml bottle
5.0% ABV
Molson Canadian, what beer's all about. Or so the commercials said. This was the first beer I ever tried. It is an alright beer to grow your chops on. This beer is a golden colour with a white head that lasts a while. It has a smell of malt and corn. It has a decent taste replete with a strong aftertaste. It has a very crisp mouthfeel with the right amount of carbonation for my palate. I think the best memories I have of this beer are all those commercials in the 80s that had bikini clad women.........what man with a beer belly doesn't like bikini clad women? |

1812 | Coors | United States | Pale Lager | 1.7
Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 4 November 18, 1988
Gift
355ml bottle
5.0% ABV
$0.00
Version: Coors Banquet Beer brewed by Molson Breweries of Canada
An unimpressive entry from one of the big three. The beer is a very light yellow colour in the glass, with a very thin white head that quickly dissipates. The aroma dissipates as the beer is poured from the bottle into the glass. The taste reminds me of burnt sugar and this taste lingers for quite a while after the beer is gone. The mouthfeel is too watery as well. This is the only beer I can think of where the 'Lite' version is superior in taste. Not a beer I would recommend to my enemies let alone my friends |

1813 | Milwaukee's Best | United States | Pale Lager | 1.0
Aroma: 2 | Appearance: 2 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 2 February 1, 1994
P & H Café (Memphis, Tennessee, USA)
Shared Pitcher of Draught
4.60% ABV
$2.00
There is not a lot to say about this beer that is good, not for me anyway. The beer is a very very light gold colour that is reminiscent of American lagers. There is no discernable smell to speak of nor is there any discernable taste. The mouthfeel is very watery with few hints of any carbonation. Overall this is not a beer that I would try again, nor is it a beer that I would recommend to others. This beer led to my worst beer experience ever. I was given this at a bar in Memphis Tennessee. It was clear enough that I could read the newspaper through the full glass. No aroma to speak of, and very little flavour. I asked the waitress what it was. She replied, It's 'Milwaukee's Best'. I replied that if that was Milwaukee's best, I would hate to taste their worst. I was promptly asked to leave the bar. |

This brew was the laughingstock at my graduate school department. I avoided it as long as I could but alas, I did eventually try it. It was rank right out of the bottle, and thankfully it had a more yellowish tinge than Milwaukee's Best..........and that's a very minor thankfully.

Re-Review
Brewed in Canada by Stroh Canada / Sleeman Brewing and Malting Company
473ml can
4.9% ABV (as written on can)
Canned On: September 8, 2021
LCBO Outlet #649 (Milton, Ontario, Canada – Sobey’s Plaza)
April 7, 2022
$2.15
A more experienced beer reviewer’s review! The beer pours a translucent straw gold colour with a huge fluffy white head that lingers as rocky islands for several minutes. The aroma is stale grains, herbal hops, and vomit. This beer does not smell good. The mouthfeel is thin and carbonation is average. The taste is just as bad as the aroma. Thirty minutes after finishing this…..it is still ravaging my tongue! My score has been adjusted slightly! (1.0 -> 1.3)
|

I tried it a few times here in Canada (brewed by Molson under license) and was pleasantly surprised. After moving to Memphis Tennessee, I tried it there, and was even more pleasantly surprised, an American brewed beverage that was better than it's Canadian brewed counterpart (unlike Budwesier, Coors, Coors Light, and Miller High Life). For a long time, this was the one American beer I came back to from time to time. The aroma is pleasant with some slight malty tones. The colour is a light golden colour similar to straw. The taste is slightly malty with some grassy undertones. It is very crisp on the tongue with some mild carbonation. A nice refreshing beer for an American macrobrew.

March 11, 2015
Another beer being revisted on Cheapie Wednesday. The beer pours a translucent medium gold colour with a short-lived snow white bubbly head. The aroma is grainy malts, vomit, and cooked vegetables. The mouthfeel is weak to medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is not that good and comparable to Canadian stock ales with milky cereal notes and metallic finishes. |

The mouthfeel is very watery with hints of carbonation. Overall this is not a beer that I would try again, nor is it a beer that I would recommend to others.. It gets a 3 overall simply because they had the Bottom Bottle Opener at one time. Unfortunately the case we got contained bottles that had obviously been used many times before because the glass around the opener had been well chipped/worn away meaning that we needed the bottle opener anyway. |

The aroma is very weak. The colour I've only seen before in toilets. And the taste is watery. Like Budweiser, it amazes me how many people order this beer instead of the multitude of great tasting treats in Canadian bars. |

It was very crisp to the taste with no clear identifiable flavours. A beer that goes down too damn easy. |

Heineken is a beer that I expected more from. With it's place among the classic beers of the world secure, let's get down to the review. The colour is a straw gold colour that is representative of so many North American style lagers. The aroma is slightly hoppy and not too overpowering. The taste is pretty mild with nothing to really distinguish it from anything else. Not a bad beer, but it isn't a favourite of mine either. |
