473ml can 11.0% ABV
Canned On: August 6, 2019
LCBO Outlet # 007 (Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Eglinton / Mt. Pleasant)
October 4, 2019
$6.95
The beer pours a translucent light rust colour with a thin tan coloured film for a head. The aroma is alcohol, honey, alcohol, yeast, more alcohol, some light grains, and even more alcohol. The switch from 10% to 11% isn’t going well in my opinion. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with below average carbonation. The flavour is all alcohol, with some hints of dark fruit sweetness. This takes me back to the first couple of barleywines I had, since then they’ve only gotten better but this will scare me off the style for a while.

The aroma is dark fruits, caramel, herbal hops, and molasses. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is caramel and molasses with a definite bitter hop finish. It’s a cold night this evening and one can feel the alcohol as it goes down the hatch, which tonight, is quite comforting.

2006 Vintage
250ml
13.3%
I tried this beer on January 31, 2008 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto. The bottle was a 2006 vintage, and 13.3% ABV. The beer poured a dark reddish brown with am offwhite bubble head. The aroma was very yeasty, with some malt and candy tones. The mouthfeel was full-bodied, creamy with mild carbonation. The flavour was overpowering from an alcohol perspective with some detectable dark fruity tones and a stomach warming presence. Like the Samichlaus, not a beer I'd try again!

The aroma was sweet malt, fruit, citrusy hops and some grains. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The alcohol was definitely noticeable in this beer. There was a sweet fruity note to the flavour along with a bitter citrusy finish....but again, the alcohol was the winner (or is that loser) in the flavour category.

473ml can
5.5% ABV
Milton LCBO Outlet #1 (Milton, Ontario, Canada)
April 3, 2008

Can says it was brewed by the Big Hole Brewing Company of La Crosse, Wisconsin (same brewer that is bringing in the Yankee Jim shit!). Surprise Surprise.....the website on the side of the can does not work although the picture matches what is here on the website.

The beer poured a beautiful translucent rusty red colour with a generous white fluffy head that quickly faded to islands on the top. The aroma is a combination of florally hops (subtle) and some caramel malt (strong). The mouthfeel is medium bodied with some good carbonation, not a lot (there is some slight effervescence in the glass). The flavour has some hints of malt, but has that wonderful grapefruit-tinged hoppy bitterness I like.

Maybe Big Hole Brewing knows how to brew a beer after all.
