This "beer" is essentially a novelty; you can't really drink this stuff with any regularity, unless you like muscat grapes in your beer. It's not terrible or anything, just not a typical beer...more of a marketing ploy, I think.

This beer is hard to compare to any other beer, much like many of the Dogfish Head releases. I tried this beer on tap at first, and then by the bottle, and I found it to be delicious both ways. It's bitter like an IPA, but smooth and a bit nutty like a good brown ale. It's a smart combination done well, with more emphasis on the bitter IPA presence than on the brown flavor.

This beer is absurdly strong...I had the 2003 (?) 20% release. It's good, though...very much like a whiskey or something stronger. It's a LOT of fun to sneak one of these into a beer cooler at a party.

I felt this beer was terribly overrated both times I tried it, once in Seattle and once in Utrecht. Yes, I know, I didn't drink it in the shadow of the Abbey itself while eating cheese, etc., etc. I can taste the alcohol; this beer tastes like scotch with chocolate melted into it. However, I should point out that I haven't aged any of it yet...I should try that, I suppose, but at $13/bottle from Bottleworks in Seattle it's not worth the effort.

Sort of a barleywine-style Belgian brown, although that designation can be a bit misleading for those who don't enjoy barleywine. I love the stuff, and this beer isn't all that similar to it, really. The Golden Dragon on tap is sublime...way better than even the corked bottled version. Capped bottles are passable, but get the larger corked bottle. the taste is much better that way.
