    Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Poured a a moderately sized somewhat rocky light beige head that lasted a good 10 minutes before diminishing to a 1/4" layer of foam; some lacing. Nice, sparklingly clear medium copper color with burnished gold highlights. Aroma had a "lager-ish" character that was layered with a toasty-caramelly maltiness, yeastiness, and a perfumy-spicy hop nose. Started off-dry with a crisp acidity; middle was layered with fruity notes, yeasty-breadiness, and a pronounced bitterness that lasted through to the finish. Finished with a drying bitterness and more yeasty-breadiness. Aftertaste had a lingering bitternes and subtley woody-herabally hop flavor. Mouthfeel was light to medium bodied with a somewhat lively carbonation. The only truly American style of beer. Steam was the first craftbrew I ever tasted (summer of '85) and has been a continous presence in my life here in San Francisco. It's best to drink this brew as close to the source as possible because I feel that it doesn't travel very well. It's also best on draft (which I much prefer more than the bottled product) and consumed at no lower that 50F; it has a softer, fresher, more flavorful character that way, one that really slakes my thirst and goes well with a variety of foods (especially a hot steaming bowl of cioppino or a good pizza).
