Mikkeller Single Hop Series

General Beer Discussion by HEYBEERMAN

Was just down to my favorite beer store and saw this series. It's 7 or 8 different beers all brewed with the same malt and yeast but each with a unique hop so that you can taste/smell the differences between the various varieties. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy all of them but at $5.50 per 12 oz bottle that's pretty pricy for a beer I know nothing about. Anyone shed any light on these, are they worth it?

the yeast series was cool to do side by side. if being able to decontruct the hop in each in a tasting sounds like fun to you...totally worth it. though i think they actually make close to 20 of them. [:D]

I am a fan. I enjoyed Mikkeller's Double Simcoe, Nugget, and Nelson Sauvin and I liked the Nelson Sauvin best. So I later invested in the BrewDog / Mikkeller collaboration Devine Rebel 2010 which also features the Nelson Sauvin hop. However, the Devine Rebel is a booze-soaked barleywine with very little hop subtlety. So I then tried the Heritage Nelson Sauvin and found it to be a pale imitation of the Mikkeller. I also like the Centennial hop and have had single-hop beers featuring Centennial by Bell's, Flying Dog, and Shenandoah. I think it's an education for your palate when you can isolate one variable at a time.

I believe Bells Two Hearted is an all Centennial IPA.

I totally dig this style of tasting. A local winery, "The Vibrant Vine" does Riesling fermented at 4 different temperatures which give it flavours from dry dry dry dry apple, to diesel, to wicked sweet kiwi. I love the chemistry part of it all. Have not had the mikkellers but I have the whole set on order from Wineandcheeseclub.com for $60 US.
