Sprayed with tear gas opens Rob Maguire's eyes and inspires him to start the Ãœberculture collective, a group exposing and countering the effects of big corporations on human rights and culture. It's ironic that being sprayed with tear gas would open your eyes to a world of change, but that's what happened to Rob McGuire. Caught in a riot during 2001's Summit of the Americas demonstration in Quebec City, Rob was exposed to what he saw to be some serious flaws in the Canadian system. The tears led him to co-found the Ãœberculture collective, a group exposing and countering the effects of big corporations on human rights and culture. Rob's working towards his vision of a 'super-culture' strong enough to resist corporations, and to be able to protect its public spaces and institutions from privatization - especially public media. They want to get youth thinking about the products they buy, and the companies they support. Their projects are as ambitious as their name: one team is rolling across Canada, raising awareness of the effects of big-box department stores on Canadian towns. Their film series, Cinema Politica bridges art and politics at various universities. Diatribe Radio has just started podcasting out of Moncton. The Guerilla Garden Project, International Media Democracy Day, and No-War all have sprung from the Ãœberculture initiative. They've even launched their own brand of beer...
