During the U.S.A.' s largest beer competition, the Great American Beer Festival, over 1800 different beers are competing for a shot at these coveted awards. From the mega conglomerates that dominate Super Bowl half time ads to the little brewpubs around the corner, all come with dreams and aspirations of bringing home a medal. For the second year in a row, a relatively new South Florida brewery left their mark on this national competition. Titanic Brewery & Restaurant, located at 5813 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables took home two Silver medals, surpassing the single Bronze they won in 1999. Titanic won with their Captain Smith's Rye Ale in the "Specialty" category and their Triple Screw Light Ale in the German-style Kolsch category. Brewmaster Jamie Ray has been receiving rave reviews on his hand-crafted beers since the April 1st, 1999 opening. In June of `99 the Captain Smith's Rye was also awarded a Silver medal at the prestigious World Beer Cup, being the first Florida beer ever to receive such an award. "I knew we had an excellent product, but this is more than I ever imagined" said Kevin Rusk, owner of TITANIC Brewing Company. "Jamie just keeps hitting the ball out of the park and he really deserves all the credit. He is so conscientious about all the intricate details of brewing science, I knew he would make us proud. I just never thought he would win four major competitions in the mere eighteen months we've been open." The 19th annual Great American Beer Festival was held in Denver CO. from October 5th to the 7th. The three day nationwide competition draws over 400 breweries and attracts 35,000 visitors from all over the world.
