Formerly the Charnwood, a run- down Ind Coope pub, it was briefly closed for a simple and speedy refurbishment, and revived with a new name chosen from many entries for a competition organised in conjunction with a local free newspaper. Developments since then have been essentially evolutionary in nature: real ales, quality food, imported bottled beers, new toilets, live music, bed and breakfast, more real ales, imported draught beers - all have contributed to a history of soundly consolidated success. Competition has stiffened over the years, but the Swan retains its reputation as Loughborough's favourite haunt of real ale enthusiasts. The Swan offers three regular ales: Castle Rock 'Rushes' Gold 3.5% Tetley Bitter 3.7% Archers Golden 4.7% There are seven pumps for guest real ales which come from all around the British Isles, featuring the latest seasonal brews as well as the 'Old Favourites.' Swan patrons manage to sup their way through at least 500 different beers each year! It is one of the few pubs in the locale to permanently offer a mild, which changes regularly. They hold two beer festivals each year, featuring over 30 real ales, live music and the occasional quirk! The first is in May, in the cool spring sunshine, with any luck! And this year's birthday beer festival (17) is in November with a more wintery theme. More stouts and porters are available with the odd winter warmer. Admission to both these events is free.
