Backa was famous in beer production for centuries. After the Turks being banished out of this territory, in 47 communities of "Backa zupanija" 17 breweries were founded. The beer was massy produced. It was tought that the brewery "Becej" was founded in 1806, but recently some kind of document was found in history chancery of the town Novi Sad - it is a contract from 1754, given to the brewer Petkofen, to built a brewery on a certain place (todays location). History of the brewery is still being explored. In the beginning, the beer was produced by craftsmen, and in 1845 it started to be sold in bottles. Recipes for making beer became better, and the brewers improved there knolidges in Cehoslovakia and Germany. Some of these recipes still exist such as the way of making famous "Becej's dark beer" with addition of a roasted barley, which basically hasn't change for a hundred years.
