Nine Locks Brewing came about when the founders Shaun and Danny O’Hearn (cousins) were enjoying a craft beer on a warm summer night in 2014. Both craft beer enthusiasts, the two often talked about building a craft brewery in their hometown of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. After finding an ideal location on the Waverley Road in Dartmouth, the two decided on the name Nine Locks Brewing Co. to give tribute to the historic Shubenacadie Canal, where there were nine original locks built to facilitate transportation between Halifax and the agricultural, timber, and coal producing areas of Northern Nova Scotia and the Annapolis Valley. It was important to them that the brewery honoured the tradition of craft brewing techniques using all natural ingredients with no preservatives, no pasteurization, and never any filtration to ensure the most flavourful beer possible. After a year of planning, and another 8 months of building, their dream of opening their own craft brewery has come to fruition.
