A handful more of different brands in bottles and a few liquors to choose from rounded out the small inventory. Today, this thriving two story Tavern has vastly broadened its horizons to 10 beers on draught, even more in bottles and an abundance of liquor to make any cocktail imaginable. Nicky's also provides a lunch and dinner menu everyday of the week, complete with the infamous Perch Fish Fry included on the Friday menu. There's a saying at Nicky's, "Nicky's takes pride in bringing our customers sandwiches that are tasty, filling and out of the ordinary." This is true with every item included on the menu, right down to the made from scratch soups. During the first Reagan administration, 1981 to be exact, the owners of Ace Hi closed its doors. But the space was not closed for long. Tommy and John of Nicky's Lionhead Tavern threw them back open. What it came down to was good ol' Fatherly advice. Harold Nick saw an opportunity that he simply couldn't pass up. The building that housed Ace Hi, a popular neighborhood bar, was for sale. Harold jumped on the chance to purchase the property with the bar inside. With a background in real estate he had a knack for finding great property deals and this was most definitely one of them. Harold had two sons whom he had in mind when he stumbled upon this deal. He had the foresight to see that this would be a great opportunity for the both of them. He also had the utmost confidence in his boys to make this work. Tommy, the younger son, had a degree in Sociology and the oldest, John, followed his father's footsteps in the world of real estate. With hard work, determination and great people skills Nicky's started out with a bang. Tommy and John may not have known the difference between a Whiskey Sour and a Whiskey Manhattan, but that's just details. The brothers would learn by trial and error but mostly from customers teaching them their drink preferences. From the very beginning, Nicky's flourished as a laid back, low-key bar. Friends and neighbors frequented the small bar for cold beer, some relaxation and to chat with Tommy and John. Packer players even came in at night when the team held a pre-season camp close to the St. Norbert College. In fact, it wasn't uncommon during training camp to have 30 or so players at one time spending their nights at Nicky's. They have pictures on the wall to prove it. In fact, there are many, many pictures and newspaper articles about Nicky's and their friends practically covering an entire hallway wall. The years came and went until 1998 when Nicky's needed to expand. The expansion was due partly to keep up with current trends of customers wanting to eat out instead of just drinking out and partly for space. The once small neighborhood bar doubled in size to a two story Tavern. You can sit in the original back bar, the newer front bar, or even upstairs to enjoy Nicky's. Adding food to this establishment increased Nicky's popularity among not just the locals but more and more patrons. With its diverse menu of appetizers, homemade soups, fresh salads, one of a kind sandwiches, classic burgers, pizza, delicious entrees, and even desserts, there is a little something for everyone. Isn't it time you tried Nicky's Lionhead Tavern?
