The little Irish village in the Heart of the Byward market had its humble beginnings in 1992, when the now famous Heart and Crown opened its doors and quickly became known as the ideal place to find a truly good pint in a warm, Celtic atmosphere. A second venue, the Snug Pub which began operation in 1997, is a cozy, well-appointed, alehouse with an inviting fireplace and intimate coves for small groups. Mother McGintey's and Roisin Dubh (The Black Rose), up and running since 2001, complete the Irish Village -each a treasure in its own way and a nostalgic reminder of the old sod. The pride and joy of the Village is its annual Fleadh held each September - a festival that celebrates Irish culture in song, music, literature and dance. Part of the Bytown Days celebration, the event has become one of the highlights of the Ottawa-Irish calendar.
