Flat 12 Bierwerks began production in late Fall of 2010 and opened the doors of our taproom to the public on December 30th, 2010. The brewery began as the dream of Brewer Rob Caputo and two partners. After honing his craft and perfecting recipes for years on his own, Rob sought out the counsel of brewers he admired in his native state of Michigan. With their advice and learning in hand, and the good fortune of finding business partners, it was time to make it reality. The Inspiration behind Flat12 So named for the Flathead or “Flat-12” cylinder engine, a beast of an engine developed by the pioneers of high-speed, high-endurance automobiles of the early 1900s.The Flat12 was a powerful response to the quest for speed and endurance that introduced the world to Indianapolis and its famed motor speedway. At the time of the development of the flathead engine, Indianapolis was a melting pot of cultures eager to forge a new life in America while maintaining their traditions, including brewing. The ‘Bierwerks’ moniker and line-up of beers pays proper respect to those American immigrant traditions of innovation and craft brewing while also offering exciting new seasonals and specialties that do so with a bit of irreverence. Specialties and Seasonals like Brewmaster Rob Caputo’s Glazed Ham Porter, Flat Jack Pumpkin Ale and Cucumber Kolsch are Flat12 fan favorites and likely to become anticipated annual staples of the Flat12 line-up. In 2011, Flat 12 offered draft beer, distributed throughout the state of Indiana. In early 2012, Flat 12 began to offer bottled product. In a short time, this production formed into a house line-up of five beers in bottles: Walkabout Pale Ale Half Cycle IPA Upside Down Blonde Pogue's Run Porter Hello My Name is Amber In 2013, we again expanded our brewing capacity with two 120 barrel fermenters. This allowed Flat 12 to expand the bottled line-up to include four seasonals and to expand our distribution footprint, beginning with Tennessee.
