Ceased operations in late December 2016 due to lack of business. A wise woman reminded me that being too focused on one point or “scene” can make you miss the “Big Picture”. I do that far too often which makes for some editing and re-writes of posts while trying to trying to fill a website in order not to miss the point. So what is the “Big Picture” called Broke ‘n Rode Brewing Co.? For starters who are we? Well not being open we are a small staff consisting of myself, my beautiful wife Tara and our two boys Koby and Kai. Depending on how well received our brewery is and how fast we grow, more staff will be brought in later on. The town is 100 Mile House in British Columbia, a very small town with lots of surrounding communities which makes for a large trading area. The city life is not here which makes it a great place for kids to grow up and for adults to avoid the rat race. Everyone should experience small town life – it’s great! So why a brewery? Well, why not? A person could start just about any business or do any career if they do the research, spend the time and learn the ropes. Brewing beer was a two decade pastime in our house – drinking and enjoying it has been much longer. With many different styles and flavors of beer in the world to experience, someone could spend a lifetime trying to sample them all. If you can’t get to do that why not brew you own? Beer’s four basic ingredients just don’t come together on their own, they need our help, time and a bunch of equipment to craft them into a delicious, refreshing beverage. So at a point in my life when I was feeling unfulfilled in my career after many years in a small family business I wanted to try something new. To change a career after 30 plus years isn’t so easy but with a great idea and the support of my wife I learned anything was possible. First the idea, then the name which everyone wonders about. Feeling “broke” when it seemed there was always another bill to pay and the feeling of being “broken” from the job riding you hard was how the name seed was planted. And life offers up challenges like to a cowboy who has “broke and rode” a wild horse, not giving up until he has succeeded, which we’ve all experienced at some point, this too became a part of the naming process. All along we knew this project could get tough like traveling down a rocky path or a “broken road”. When all these thoughts accumulated during a time of trying to name our nano brewery, it seemed natural to craft these sometimes complex ideas into our brand. That was when Broke ‘N Rode Brewing Co. came to life. Whether the road is broken or the wild horse has been “rode” and if everything isn’t always perfect, at the end of the day the beer is always going to taste great – to us anyway. 100 Mile House is a hundred miles from somewhere along the Gold Rush Trail. I’m sure there’s lots of history and stories that accompany the names given to towns like ours along the route that so many prospectors must have traveled. For us 100 Mile was where we had spent most or all of our lives (Tara was even born here), although small it seemed logical to stick to the place we knew best and start Broke ‘N Rode right here only add another “scene” to the eclectic collection of stores, services and characters that are all a part of our Big Picture.
