Circa 1852, Jacob North constructed the first brewing operations in Port Colborne. Jacob's story is fascinating and begins in Alsace where he and his brother fell in love with the same young lady. Unfortunately the young brewmaster did not receive the hand of his love and emigrated to Canada. The brewery grew quickly both in volume and reputation providing beer to the local and regional economy. Following a scare from the Fenians, Jacob sold his brewery to Henry Cronmiller and his son-in-law Thomas White who started the Cronmiller & White Brewing & Malting Company. The brewery, in its time, was Port Colborne's largest employer preceeding the construction of INCO next door. The brewery closed at the time of prohibition in 1919, later moved to Welland, and eventually sold to what is now one of the big breweries in Canada. Now, 100 years later, Fred Davies and his son Conrad, have built a new brewery in the downtown core, a stones throw away from the original brewery. As craft brewing continues to grow rapidly in Ontario, the Breakwall Brewing Company is focused on brewing the best craft beer possible using as much locally sourced products available. Partnerships have been formed with local growers to ensure the beer is always fresh, brewed to perfection, and has a wide variety of options for every beer lover's tastes. The Breakwall has paid tribute to the past by adopting local iconic or historically significant images on the product line. Complementing this is a full service restaurant with equally iconic fare from around the area. Diligently crafted, right here in Port Colborne.
