Set up by Nigel Fitzhugh in 1977 near the village from which it takes its name, Blackawton Brewery was one of the pioneers of the microbrewery revolution in the 1970s. The brewery was sold in the 1980s and moved to Washbourne near Totnes. By 2000 brewery ownership transferred again. From Devon's oldest brewery it became one of Cornwall's youngest, based in the Tamar valley at Saltash. The Brewery remains committed to its original mission to brew traditional ales using locally sourced ingredients, supplying local pubs in Devon and Cornwall. Blackawton beers are beautifully crafted using traditional methods with no artificial additives, using the same six barrel set-up that dates back to the brewery’s origins. This includes converted dairy equipment from the 1930s that provide the open top fermenting tanks. This equipment is believed to have come from the old Tamar Brewery in Plymouth. The beers produced today include Blackawton's tried-and-trusted favourites: Blackawton Original Bitter, West Country Gold, 44 Special and Headstrong. These regulars have been joined by Exhibition Ale, which has been brewed for the Wetherspoon pub chain and more recently Sunrise and Moorland Ale.
