Beach Brewing Co. was founded in 2010 by Justin MacDonald. We’re often asked what the significance of the name “Beach” is, other than the obvious reference to our location in Virginia Beach. To Justin, Virginia Beach means something more than a spot on a map. Growing up in a military family, and later joining the service himself, “home” was something of an abstract concept. Moving every few years to a new state or new country meant that “home” was wherever he happened to be at the moment. Moving and settling in Virginia Beach changed that. This is the true significance of our name. The BEACH is an adoptive home and one we’re proud of, city and brewery alike. Beginning humbly in the Fall of 2010, we first began producing beer on an incredibly small pilot system, making roughly 12 gallons at a time. While it was an exciting and enjoyable time, making such small batches was not very efficient from a labor perspective. Waiting in the wings was a used 5 barrel (~155 gallon) brewhouse we purchased from a small brewery in New Hampshire. The problem? We had to wait for a natural gas line to be dug to our building. Once we finally had fuel, we fired up the 5 barrel and ran it hard for the next 3 years. During this period from 2010 – 2013, we experienced rapid growth, but discovered an ultimate truth about running a brewery: a brewhouse’s hunger for stainless steel is boundless. Frantically working to add capacity to satisfy the still modest, but quickly growing demand, we came to the realization that a move and expansion was shortly in our future. By the end of 2013, the move was a reality and we worked, often on little sleep, to establish the new brewery while running the old one simultaneously. In January 2014, we brewed the first batches of beer on our new 15 barrel brewhouse into shiny new 30 barrel fermenters. The doors to our new facility and taproom opened a month later in February, just a block from our original location. We’re extremely proud of this culmination of nearly 4 years of hard work and look forward to sharing it with you!
