Introducing HIGHWAYMEN BA 2021, a 12.7% Barleywine BA... One of our absolute favorite Barrel Aged beers returns, now double oaked, yet still effortlessly encompassing all of our favorite components of Barleywine. This beer starts off as 100% pale Arizona grown and malted Copeland barley via Sinagua Malt. We then run off two very thick mashes of this into the kettle and boil for a minimum of 6 hour average, sometimes more. This process gets our initial pale color into a deep ruby amber with all the flavors that come with such a transformation. Hopped lightly with low alpha varieties. Just enough to bring balance to sweetness. This is our first iteration using a technique of adding additional premium selected oak to each barrel. Only to up the rich toffee and a caramels that we strive for in this style. We probably won’t ever look back from here, the results blew us away. This first blend is a handful of various American whiskey barrels (stuffed with said additional oak during the last months of aging), aged for 9 months total. We will be leaving the remaining barrels from this batch for 9 more months to study the effects of long term double oak aging. Why not. Rich caramel, light roasted cocoa, dark fruit/vanilla cake, more caramel, more toffee, american whiskey warming it the whole time. We hope you enjoy this latest venture from our barrel project. 12.7% abv.

Rated Feb. 2021. 12oz beige waxed bottle pours with a clear mahogany colored body that supports really no head at all. The aroma offers up inviting notes of raisins, prunes, molasses and then soft smooth whiskey and booze. The taste delivers smooth slick sweet rich malt thickened raisins and prunes as well as molasses like reduced sugars. The beer notes slowly fold into smooth whiskey, molasses soaked oak, a thin vanilla sensation and then restrained booziness. This is a pleasing sipper barleywine experience with a rounded out balanced and blended flavors. The barrel treatment did nothing to thin out the body as it's dead on smooth thick goodness.
