Can't say this is straight up better than the base beer (it'll get the same score) but I'd pony up and get it half the time if I could. Thanks to ggrumet for the trade. Kinda like BA Bigfoot...this is exactly what you expect. All the flavors of the original beer are still present, but there's the additional aroma and flavor of vanilla, oak, and booze. Still dangerously smooth, and a great prototype for what a BA barleywine should be.

I have really been looking forward to this since Victory announced it in the fall. Old Horizontal is a great barleywine so I had high hopes for this. 750ml corked and caged bottle pours an attractive redish hued brown with a thick cream colored head that offers beautiful lacing. Complex aromas of dark fruits and strong liquor make this very inviting. Flavors of dates and raisins coupled with a nice mellow caramel sweetness before the vanilla and oak from the barrel. This is great. I'm very happy with how well this turned out considering that Dark Intrigue (Storm King aged in bourbon barrels) was a relative let down. I'd like to see Victory release this yearly.
