First one in, last one out, sweating in the summer, freezing in the winter. Years of toiling and boiling have turned our brewer Todd into a cynical, surly, bitter brewer... You too can get bitter without all the fuss. Simply crack open a can and fill a glass with our latest - Bitter Brewer. Pale orange in color, this ale gets intense toast and marmalade character from British malt and American hops. Dry-hopping brings the floral citrus aromas. So go ahead and get bitter.

Rated June 2008. Sweet trade bonus from OSLO, thanks again buddy. Pours clear deep gold with white head. It as a full aroma of crystal malts, floral perfume, sweet sugary strawberries and a bit of orange juice. The taste is much the same as the nose with floral hop bitterness then some crystal malt sweetness moving into sweet citrus hop notes. Nice brew that doesn’t seem to be a bitter due to its bold flavors that don’t burst the boundaries of the style by too much.

This is the lightest color I have ever seen in a bitter. A hazy straw yellow pour topped by a snow white bubbly head, which didn’t last. Aroma is cereal, light citrus, spicy hops, and yeast. Almost has a blonde ale feel. Mouthfeel is average. Flavor is bitter with definite citrus and spice notes dominating.

Pours somewhat hazy apricot with a fairly thick eggshell head. Malty aroma has a strong hoppy hay overtone. Flavor has malty, hay, and subtle lemonade notes, definitely refreshing. Texture is, well, not much; still, it goes down well. Don’t surly, be bitter.

Light opaque dark yellow, fluffy white foam head. Hoppy aroma and strong bitter taste. Some citrus notes. Like this beer, glad I took home from USA. (Velp, 201512)

Canned on 5/12/2014. My first experience with this type of beer. Pours a golden amber color with a two finger eggshell colored head. Leaves some decent lacing on the sides of the glass. Very fragrant. Aromas of grapefruit, lemon, pine sap, sweet malt. Smells a bit like iced tea. Citrus and sap take a back seat to the malt on the taste. Very balanced, despite some bitterness on the finish. Mouthfeel is full and clean. This is not at all what I expected. I purposely chose this beer because it was brewed by Surly, whose other beers rank among my favorites. The inclusion of as many hops as this beer has, is what won me over. A bit pricey for a beer with only 4% abv, but an awful lot of flavor. Two thumbs up for Surly...AGAIN!

Lots of fruity hops on the nose, very lively. Appearance is a cloudy burnt orange with white head. Flavor is a clean crisp hop with a dry finish, mouthfeel is pretty thin, at 4% you would expect that. The super light body really makes the hops more pronounced but unfortunately that is this beers single dimension. Too many good ones out there for me to come back to this, especially since I have to drive all the way to Duluth to get it.

Pours a hazy light amber with a big bubbly head. Aroma is hop heavy but watered down. Taste is very mild and hoppy at the same time. I was going to give this one a worst review but the taste get a little better the more you drink it. Not my favorite but it is very drinkable. Will have again.

Had this on tap a couple times at Surly not too long ago. Also picked up a 4pack of this and hoisted one last night. Pours an orange amber colour with a decent amount of froth. noticeable hops on the nose as well as the palate. Taste is semi fruity, with grapefruit and peach notes. Some soft grain near the finish, but hops rounds it off smoothly.

One of a handful of Surly cans sent my way from Slowrunner. An Americanized version of the Bitter style, and a very well made one at that. Very pale, clear, fairly light and quenching. Great balance of citrus hops and bready malt.
