Gladiator Essedarius Bourbon Imperial Roman Style Ale is unlike any competitor in the colosseum of craft beers, it thunders into the arena like a charioteer at top speed with notes of raisin, cheery, and fig aromas leading; followed by roasted barley, vanilla, and bourbon barrel laced malt coating your tongue. The smoky finish is dry, lingering and complex. A barley wine style ale of epic proportions.

750mL caged and corked bottle, courtesy of markwise, pours with a murky muddy dark brown body that supports a nice looking mocha colored head that took some pour height to tease up. The aroma offers up sweet molasses and caramel and smooth candy like bourbon booze. Beneath those notes murmurs a thick stream of thin sweet dark fruity esters. First off, particularly while this is a little too cold, this reminds me of bourbon Angel’s Share and I’m really liking it. The taste is similar and seems Angels Share like, to my liking. I get smooth bourbon mixing with molasses and slivers of caramel. Behind those notes are timid little sweet dark fruity esters that mingle about well off in the background. This is s a pretty damn good barrel aged barleywine. Well done.

I bought this a couple years ago and aged for 2 before sampling on NYE. I think that was a good idea, as it may have smoothed it out a bit. Aroma is strong of bourbon and alcohol. Once sampled, the ABV% is somewhat hidden. Flavors of fig, raisin, bread....all kinds of complex malts and hops. Reminded me of some of the He’brew Anniversary beers that have been around. This was on sale for only $7.99 at the time...so wishing I had grabbed 2-3.
