Andhrimnir is the chef of the Æsir and einherjat in Norse Mythology. Every day in Valhallo, he slaughters the beast Sæhrímnir and cooks it in Eldhrimnir, his cauldron. It is also the winner of Norwegian national championship for homebrewers. We at Nøgne Ø want to make this great barley wine available commercially, so beer drinkers will have an opportunity to experience the best Norwegian homebrew. Though made in Nøgne Ø brewery, this beer was brewed by its creator, Gahr Smith-Gahrsen. Ingredients: Grimstad water, malted barley, hops, yeast. 65 IBU.

Sampled on 1/8/2010. This BarleyWine pours a medium brown color from a 50cl bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, fruity and sweet. A medium to full bodied barley wine. The malts are fruity, caramel and sweet. The hops are earthy. Hints of brown sugar. Very smooth tasting. Hides the alcohol well. A touch sweet. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Bottled@Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Ambery red colour, small beige head. Aroma is caramel, alcohol, dark fruits and some slight notes of herbs. Flavour is the same with some rather bready notes as well. Balanced Barley Wine, that’s very drinkable.

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Batch #435, ABV 10%. Deep brown colour, slightly hazy, big beige head. Pleasant aroma of brown malts, notes of rum-raisin and fortified wine, hints of spices and oak. The flavour has loads of malty sweetness and alcohol, notes of dark dried fruits and oak, hints of spices (esp. anise) and liquorice. There is a firm hoppy bitterness in the finish. Powerful beer, a bit "raw in the edges", will probably benefit from a year or two (perhaps more) in the cellar.
