This is our re-creation of the high gravity beer brewed for the English expedition to find the Northwest Passage led by Sir George Nares in 1875. After following the original grain recipe, we age it in a bourbon barrel for nine months.

    Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Dark brown pour with mahogany highlights when held up to the light. Tiny tan head that quickly settles into a ring on top of the glass. Some spotty lacing. Strong, enticing aromas of caramel/toffee, bourbon, wood and vanilla. Flavors include caramel, dark fruit, bourbon, wood and a hint of vanilla. The bourbon presence does not overwhelm the flavors of this delicious English Barleywine, but simply enhances them. Extremely well balanced. Mouthfeel is full and pleasing. I would put this beer among the best barleywines I have yet to taste, including some heavy hitters like Sucaba. I have procured 4 bottles, this one being the first, and can't wait to taste a few of the others with a year or so on them.
