Made to Celebrate Founders 15th Anniversary, Bolt Cutter Barley Wine is an American barley wine that pours deep copper color and is strong, sweet and malt-forward, with a spicy complexity. Typical of the style, it is very cellarable. The final product is a blend using beer that was aged in Bourbon barrels, some from aged maple syrup Bourbon barrels and some from standard fermentation. After blending, the beer was allowed to mature in bottles and kegs for a few months before releasing.

Being prepared for this NOT being a 100% barrel aged beer was a big help. Like with Stoic, I think this is "only" a 97th percentile beer, and not a 100, because of expectations. People expecting a CBS like barreling or a bourbon bomb will be disappointed...unless they appreciate that while the beer might not be what they were expecting, it's a GREAT barleywine. For 15%, pretty mellow. Still a big beer, with ample sweetness, but incredible balance between the caramel and oak, good dose of citric hops, and slight vanilla, bourbon, and maple sweetness relegated to the background. Aroma and flavor are 9+. Couldn't keep my nose out of the glass, and though I'm sure it's a good thing I shared, I could have drank this 750 all by myself, and loved every sip. In the top 2% of newbies in 2012. Thanks Greg, aka ggrumet, for the trade. Ironically, same score as the beer I sent you for it!

750ml bottle poured an attractive brown/red with noticeable carbonation but little head retention. I notice a lot of floral hops on the nose coupled with strong notes of phenol alcohol. The mouthfeel is smooth and well balanced - it is not too thick but nor is it watery. Surprisingly, it is very drinkable for its high ABV. Flavors are remarkably smooth. Bittering hops provide a an earthy undertone and help cut the massive malt bill. This is sweet, but not overly so. Light notes of oak battle with raisins and honey. The barrel takes a back seat on this blend - while it is pleasant those expecting the bourbon to take front stage will be very disappointed. Founders deserves credit for how well crafted this is. It is drinkable and pleasant for the ABV. Regardless, I can't help but think this will be viweed as a let down due to the hype that surrounds these Founders releases. I liked it and recomend it. I have a few bottles aging and will revisit to see how this evolves.
