HISTORY & STYLE Originating in the 1800s, Scottish ales were classified on a “shilling” scale based on their alcohol strength, typically ranging from 60 shilling (“light”) to 90 (“wee heavy”). In the midst of these extremes are 80 shilling ales (“export”), classic crowd-pleasers and a style that has stood the test of time. TASTING NOTES Pours a deep copper colour. Malt character is predominant, with a few esters, and just enough hops for balance. Toasted flavour, and dry, with mild-to-moderate caramel. The beer pours a translucent shimmering copper colour with a creamy rocky light tan coloured head. Aroma is earthy hops, biscuity malt, and butterscotch. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is cereal malt, some spices, and a nice bitter hop finish.

Pours a good size frothy creamy tan head and has a clear amber appearance. Leaves some sticky dirty lacing. Aromas of Flavours are very much on the malty side, some barley and oat notes, subtle sweet malts, herbal and grassy hops. Flavours also have a bit of a smokey hint to it, very faint burnt taste. Average mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. Not bad.

Batch No. 4719, pkg. date 11/19/15. Pours a clean golden-amber colour with a nice frothy beige that stays a long time and creates creamy lacing. Roasted malt aromas with some caramel, coffee and hops. The taste is also roasted malts blended with darker grains, coffee notes and decent dryness in the finish from the hops. Everything is all well-balanced between the roasted malts, kind of with a wood-feel, not too much sweetness (nice fruitiness) and some good hops making this one not syrupy. Good drinkability.

Dark copper pour with a white head that reduces to a thin cap. Leaves only dots of lacing. Caramel malt is dominant in the nose and flavour. It also has flavours of toffee, toast, mildly grassy and a touch of peat. Medium mouthfeel with a dry finish. Nice.
