About:
Right now saisons and bretty beers are doing it for me, but I always dig on barley wines. I love fishing, writing, literature, and beer and I spend much of my time devoted to any or all of these loves. And there's nothing more pleasing than mixing a love-fest soup of drunken fishing, hiking, camping, and writing...all with the dog at my side. Cheers!

This is one of my favorite beers yet I can't pin down what I love about it. In fact, it was this beer and Sinebrychoff Porter that got me interested in ratebeer.com this last summer. I've been holding off until recently on rating beers because I haven't been able to figure this one out. Nothing outstanding about Blue Heron, nothing to scoff at either. First tried it on the recommendation of a barkeep in Bozeman in '99 and it has been my favorite session beer ever since. Pours a fantastic translucent tangerine and gold with a fluffly, brainy head. Mild hop and citrus nose that refreshes and clears my senses. Each hop and malt balanced sip is greeted with this aromatic tease. Always better in the middle of the beer, but fine and proud character from start to finish. I find it to be less thin and watery than most APAs, with a more agreeable bitterness front to back. When living in MT, always kept at least six of these on hand. I am heavily biased, for whatever reason, but I love this beer.

09.30.05 Tap at brewpub. Called 2220 Red. Hazed amber with nothing but a whisp of tan head. Aroma is dominated by rancid butter and lettuce. Flavor is quite acetic and nasty. Searching for good flavors lead me to white toast with orange marmalade, something like sugar free cinnamon gum. Really, it was hard to find anything good with this stuff.

09.30.05 Tap at brewpub. Decent enough with some grapefruit pith, light cracker. Pretty looking beer with lasting and lacy beige head. Touch bitter to finish. Mild APA.

Black, black, black! A beautiful beer with a well balanced mix of roastiness, dryness, and bitersweet molasses. Mocha and malt nose. Slightly tart on the finish which is a nice distinction from some other NW stouts. A good beer.

09.30.05 Tap at brewpub. Cola brown pour, lasting thin head. Mite lactic on the nose, some bitter coffee, caramel. Pretty effy stuff, wet, thin for a schwarz, let alone an oatmeal stout. No sweetness where I wanted it to be. Not balanced, but has some decent flavors here and there.
