August 10, 2007
Esplanade Bier Markt (Toronto, Ontario, Canada – 58 The Esplanade)
330ml bottle
8.00% ABV
Bottled On: Unknown
$9.25
The beer was a cloudy brown in colour with a short lasting off-white head. The aroma was very yeasty with some spicy tinges in the background. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with a fair amount of carbonation while the flavour was full of yeast and wet bread. Another fine product from St. Bernardus!

August 8, 2007
Korean Grill House (Toronto, Ontario, Canada – 214 Queen Street West)
330ml bottle
4.80% ABV
Bottled On: Unknown
$4.25
The beer poured a golden yellow into the glass with no head. There was no aroma to speak of..........I even had my partner smell the beer and she couldn't smell anything either. The mouthfeel was thin with mild carbonation. The taste was slightly malty with a dry finish.

78 Kawartha Lakes Brewing (KLB) Raspberry Wheat Canada American Wheat 2.9

August 7, 2007
Smokeless Joe’s (Toronto, Ontario, Canada – 125 John Street)
592ml draught
4.50% ABV
Kegged On: Unknown
$6.75
The beer was a beautiful translucent red that reminded me of a Paulaner Salvator with very little head. The aroma was light on malt with a hint of raspberry. The mouthfeel was very weak...watery and no carbonation. The flavour was a combination of raspberry and coffee. The scary part of this beer is that after taking my notes from the first taste and writing them down..........the last 2/3 of the beer went down in maybe 5 seconds. This beer was WEAK. .

The aroma was hints of malt and some spice. The mouthfeel was light but with heavy heavy carbonation. The taste was slightly citrusy with a bitter aftertaste.

80 Bells Cherry Stout United States Fruit Stout 3.4

July 27, 2007
The Beerbistro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada - 18 King Street East)
355ml bottle
7.00% ABV
Bottled On: Unknown
$14.00
I bought this on the waitress' suggestion (should I get this or Unibroue's Trois Pistoles). It poured coca-cola black into a tulip glass with absolutely no head. The aroma was that of coffee and cherries. The mouthfeel was crisp and full-bodied with a medium level of carbonation. The taste started off good with chocolate and cherries but by the end, it was so tart on the back of the tongue, it was all I could do to finish.

81 McAuslan St. Ambroise Noire à L'Avoine / McAuslan St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout Canada Oatmeal Stout 5.0

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

July 27, 2007
The Beerbistro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada - 18 King Street East)
500ml draught
5.0% ABV
Kegged On: Unknown
$6.50
Wow! Impressive. It came to me in a glass (on draught) and appeared to be chocolate milk with a thick head. The beer was dark brown, with a medium brown head that lasted throughout the beer. The aroma was a combination of malt, chocolate, and fruits. The mouthfeel was full bodied, and not as thick as I was expecting. Nor was there a whole lot of carbonation. The flavour was full of malt, chocolate, and plums. Overall, this was a truly great experience, and completely surprised me that a stout could provide this.

July 27, 2007
The Beerbistro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada - 18 King Street East)
330ml bottle
9.0% ABV
Bottled On: Unknown
$11.40
The beer poured a deep dark brown into the Chimay glass with a generous off-white head that didn't last near as long as some other Trappists I've tried. The aroma is full of malt and yeast, with a tinge of sweetness. The mouthfeel was full-bodied with a champagne like carbonation feel. The flavour was a combination of malts and fruits. A very good beer.

The aroma was very faint malt...very faint. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied with high carbonation. The taste was awful, not sure how to describe it really. Almost has salt tones to it.

85 Zlatý Bažant / Zlaty Golden Pheasant Slovakia Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

July 25, 2007
LCBO Outlet #255 (Milton, Ontario, Canada – Main / Bronte)
500ml bottle
5.00% ABV
Bottled On: Unknown
$2.35
The beer poured a translucent gold colour, darker than most North American lagers. The head was quite large and quite dense but disappeared quickly leaving a little lacing on the side. The aroma is hoppy with some yeasty tinges. The mouthfeel is slightly thick with ample carbonation and medium-bodied. The taste is very much pilsener like, but not as good as some of the common Czech Pilseners in my opinion.

July 24, 2007
Armadillo Texas Grill (Toronto, Ontario, Canada – Front Street West)
20oz draught
5.00% ABV
Kegged On: Unknown
$8.25
The beer was reddish brown in the glass with a thick head that lasted for a couple of minutes. The aroma was malty with no hints of honey whatsoever. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied with little carbonation. The taste was malty/beery with no hints of honey. The beer was very similar to a somewhat flat Rickard's Red. In fact, the lack of honey aroma and taste and the reddish-brown colour had me wondering.

July 23, 2007
Smokeless Joe’s (Toronto, Ontario, Canada – 125 John Street)
330ml bottle
5.20% ABV
Bottled On: Unknown
$5.90
The beer poured a translucent pale gold with a 1cm dense head that dissipated very quickly. The aroma was full of corn, wheat and grass. Not at all appealing. The mouthfeel wasn’t as crisp as I was expecting and had a medium-body feel with some carbonation. The taste was thick with corn, and as I was finishing the beer, it got cornier (no pun intended).

88 Orval Belgium Belgian Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

July 23, 2007
Smokeless Joe’s (Toronto, Ontario, Canada – 125 John Street)
330ml bottle
6.90% ABV
Bottled On: November 16, 2006
$13.00
The beer poured a cloudy brownish gold with a head that lasted through the entire trappist glass. The carbonation was very evident in the glass. The aroma was spicy and fruity, not as yeasty as an Abbey Quadrupel. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied with medium carbonation. The taste was not to my liking. The upfront taste was alright, but there was a lime-like bitterness on the back of the tongue. A very good beer, but not a great beer for me.

Re-Rated on May 28, 2008 with no changes.

July 23, 2007
Hard Rock Café (Toronto, Ontario, Canada – SkyDome)
20oz draught
4.80% ABV
Kegged On: Unknown
$6.50
The beer was a very pale yellow colour with an ample head that died quickly, but left traces on the side of the glass. There was very little aroma of note, what aroma there was...was weak and hard to identify. The mouthfeel was crisp, slightly thin-bodied, with some hints of mild carbonation. The taste was very watered down as well. Not something I would order again. I have to admit, the thin crisp mouthfeel and watery taste would make this beer go down very easy which would make it a great beer for University students wanting to get drunk on something other than Blue or Canadian.

Anyway, the beer poured a dark brown into the glass with a half inch head that lasted throughout the experience. The aroma was very yeasty with some hints of pears. It was silky smoth and full-bodied on the tongue with hints of carbonation. The flavour was outstanding...malty, yeasty, with a tinge of sweetness. Just a smidgen below the St. Bernardus Abt 12.........but not much.

Aroma? What aroma? I seriously thought I was smelling water. The mouthfeel was crisp and clean with quite a bit of carbonation. The taste was weak and thin-bodied. I followed it up with a Keith’s Red....and that was a mistake in and of itself.

July 12, 2007
The Beerbistro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
330ml bottle
11.30% ABV
Bottled On: Unknown
$16.50
Unfortunately I can't rate it as high as the St. Bernardus Abt 12 I had last night. Maybe had I tried them in the reverse order things may have been different. Anyway, this poured a dark reddish-brown with a small head (the first contrast with SS). The head disappeared rather quickly. The aroma was very similar with robust bread and malt tones as well as plums. It felt great on the tongue with a full-bodied feel. As for the taste, I'm not sure where it failed when compared to the SB, but it just failed to measure up. Possibly the higher alcohol content which I noticed more in this brew.

July 11, 2007
Bar Volo (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
330ml bottle
10.5% ABV
Bottled On: Unknown
$11.80
I was very nervous about trying this....high alcohol content, dark brown, yada yada yaada. Well, try it I did. It poured a dark brown into the glass with a small head that lasted throughout the entire beer. The aroma was thick with bread and hops, and some fruit. It was silky smooth on the tongue with a full-bodied feel. The taste.........unlike any beer I've tasted before. There was bread, and malt...and hops. The alcohol was not noticeable on the tongue.....but I felt it going down....and this is one damn fine beer!

What head there was, was gone in the blink of an eye. The aroma was weak with malt. The mouthfeel was thick and full-bodied. The taste was bland for a dark beer, some malt flavour, but not much else.

The aroma was slightly skunky and not at all appealing. As with a lot of lager/pale lager types, the mouthfeel was crisp and clean on the tongue with hints of carbonation. The taste was better than the smell with some malts and grass tones.

The taste is smooth with hints of yeast, malt and some sweetness and goes down very well. One of those beers that tastes better at the finish than it does at the beginning. Nothing overpowering. A very nice beer.
