Messrs Martin and Son established the City Brewery in 1886 on Charters Towers road and supplied beer and stout to Townsville and the surrounding area. The second brewery was owned by Allen and Lanfear Limited and was known as the “Lion Brewery” in 1894 (currently known as the old Playpen building). By 1899 it was being referred to as the “Townsville Brewery”.
