The newest micro-brewery in the province has found a home in Trenton. Gateway Brewing Company celebrated it's official grand opening last Wednesday afternoon. Owned by Matt and Kate Cottrell, the business sells two types of beer that they brew on-site, a blonde ale and their signature Gateway India Pale Ale. "My favourite one is definitely the pale ale," said brew master Chris Greasley. Greasley brings with him several years of brewing experience, 17 to be exact. "I can't see myself doing anything else, ever. I love this job," he said. Gateway's beers are handcrafted with no preservatives and no additives. "Being made with all natural ingredients makes a huge difference," said Kate Cottrell. Gateway's one litre bottles sell for less than $5. "One litre is pretty much the same as three regular size bottles, minus one sip. That's how I usually explain it," said Greasley. 'We're trying to keep our rates competitive." There's also a bar inside the brewery, so visitors can sit and have a drink, or even just a sample. The business has been open since April and Greasley said the public feed back has been "excellent." "People have been really, really receptive to the beers." Greasley said in recent years, small, independent breweries are gaining market shares against larger companies and corporations. "I think people now are drinking less," said Suzanne Andrews, manager of the Quinte West Chamber of Commerce. "So if you're only going to have one beer, you better make it a good one." The inside of the brewery is decorated with historical images of Trenton. They chose the name Gateway based on the location of the Gateway to the Trent Severn Waterway. "This will be a real asset to our community. Visitors to the region always like to sample local foods and drink while they are here so now we have somewhere new to suggest to them," said Andrews. Gateway Brewing is attached to Loyalist Brewers, which is also owned by Matt. Together, the two breweries equal more than 2,000 square feet. Loyalist Brewers, which was previously located on Frankford Crescent, is a place where people can brew their own beer to their specific tastes. Gateway Brewing is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday. It's located at 33 Ontario St., in the new plaza across from Price Chopper.
